The universe had some creative ways of throwing us mere mortals giant fuck yous while taunting the human race with class-A irony. The time between now and when Lucian had called me, summoning me down to Harbawo Harbor, was the perfect example of this.

It had been four hours and thirty-eight minutes since we discovered Jane Doe huddled in the corner of an unmarked container. It had also been four hours and thirty-eight minutes since my mind had officially been blown with the biggest what-the-fuck moment of my entire life.

Finding a naked, terrified young woman among thousands of overripe watermelons was not what I had expected when Lucian called me down to the harbor. But that was exactly what we found, and I had no fucking idea how to wrap my head around it.
