章 1: A new world

Marcus seemed like a regular eleven years old kid at first glance. He had night-black hair and sky blue pair of eyes, with a very lean body. Nobody thought he was somehow different from the other children, but how wrong were they. He was a university student in his previous life and studied philosophy as well as many more subjects he got interested in. It was about five years since he come to this world and he did not waste it. He was able to quickly adapt to his new environment.

Marcus' father was a maester who taught in the Citadell. The maesters weren't allowed to have a family, but in one of his lonely hours, he got charmed by the nicer gender and produced an heir. He kept them a secret, but still support them to the best of his ability, maybe because of remorse. Marcus' mother on the other hand was a laundress. She did her best to raise him and create a better future for her son.

The city where Marcus started his new life had the name of Oldtown. It was the main center of knowledge and culture. It was the most populated and second-largest city of Westeros. There were always a lot of travelers so the roads were full of street musicians and artists. Marcus a few years ago was able to make friends with a wanderer bard and get him to teach him harp and flute. He was a fast learner in his previous life and stayed that in this life too. Like a sponge, he absorbed everything. Marcus had a passion for learning and was obsessed with knowledge.

....

The day was shining brightly in the blue sky as the clouds were lazily drifting thru it. A lonely figure was standing alone in front of a gigantic tower that made any other house seem like an ant compared to it. The boy who was looking at it was non-other than Marcus himself. After years of thinking and speculating he made his choice of the future, he wants to live. He won't sacrifice his being for the world, he won't live for the good of the realm. He shall control the flow of the events to his own liking, but he will still live his life to the fullest and true to his own desires.

Marcus's eyes were beaming with resolve, his entire being was on the flame to make his true first step to the future in this second life. After convincing his mother about following his father's steps to become a maester, he was finally standing before the starting line. This was the beginning of his journey.

The first challenge was climbing the countless stairs to the main hall of the Citadell. Not so surprisingly there was quite a bustle inside. People from every ethnicity and from every possible financial background were there forming a colorful crowd. After going through them, he arrived in front of a maester who was busy listing the name of the new applicants. After the receptionist finally looked up, or in this case, down, he notice the kid in front of his desk.

Marcus had to spend a good deal of time explaining his intention of joining the brotherhood of monks. Every person who wanted to study in the capital of knowledge had to pay a good deal of money or had to work for the order. Most often the children of the lords who got excluded from the heritage came to the Citadel, and sometimes the wealthy who wanted to get a better education. But the most often the smartest of the poor came to the brotherhood in order to get a better life and they are the ones who most likely go through the whole education and become a maester. This was the reason Marcus give to the receptionist as well. He could read and write so he got the opportunity to learn in the best place of Westeros. While they welcomed the poor who dreamed of a better future, but without basic knowledge, they couldn't possibly let them be there. Marcus got lucky there as his father at least gave him this knowledge.

To be accepted as a student you had to prove your capability in front of three maester in order to let them judge whether you belong there or not. A student had to be able to read, write and do basic math. It seemed like a joke to Marcus at first, but after he thought about the medieval era of his past life, he quickly realized that his previous life's common sense will only pull him down.

After a bit of reasoning, Marcus was finally able to prove, he deserve a chance, so the receptionist led him to the chamber where the trials take place. There were only a handful of people who waited for the test like him. Some of them were scared, some were confidently talking with each other. Marcus simply couldn't care as it was crystal clear that he will pass. And in the end, he didn't get disappointed.
