I Obtained a Mythic Item (Reaper Scans)

(Minor spoilers) The manhwa adaptation piqued my interest so I had to check out the novel. To save you the time from reading, the story is too generic, in the beginning at least. The story has yet to reach anywhere near climax, so this isn’t really the best time to make an overall review. But if you want a summary of just the introduction itself up to the latest chapter as of today, “generic” sums it all up. Now to expand the review, before reading the novel, my expectation wasn’t really that great since we have the generic premise of a system, regression, cheat-like abilities, and lucky mc. Let’s first talk about world building. At first glance we get gates and hunters in a post-apocalyptic setting, which is a popular story setup nowadays. I’ve yet to be tired of the trope so I have no complaints against that. The usage of mythologies in this kind of trope isn’t rare either, but the author sprinkled a pinch of originality, so to speak, by incorporating Nordic entities instead of the usual Greek ones. Other than that, there really isn’t that much of a difference with the usual trope setting except being a cut above the others in terms of execution. Next is the main character. Oh boy here we go. The traits by themselves isn’t that much of a problem. Being shrewd is good and all since making better judgements means fewer stupid decisions. But his display in the first few chapters where he’d rather sell a one-of-a-kind item for money really contradicts this trait. Later on we see the mc reuniting with his mother post-regression and while that was supposed to be a touching moment, they hardly ever interact with one another in all of the chapters up to now. After showing a fragile side of himself after his reunion with his mother, the mc never showed the same behavior after reuniting with a childhood friend. This can be excused by saying that first one was a shocking reunion and the mc prepared himself for the second one, so I’ll spare the author the criticism. But I still have to mention that the author may potentially create a main character wirh no clear personality. Other than that, we have the typical traits of a “cool” character, for a lack of a better word. So we can pretty much assume our author is a bit edgy. Next is plot. For now, it’s hard to say how the story will progress since it’s still in its early stages. For one, we don’t even have a clear villain yet. There are already a couple of fight scenes, but we have yet to reach the climax. This story indeed uses a lot of tropes for me to keep track of, but while the story incorporates a lot of tropes, it isn’t too bad to the point you’ll instantly drop the novel immediately. In other words, this is just one of the novels where you’ll have to “wait and see”. It has potential, but that’s the only praise I can give it.
