You can say that Alex started to feel something was abnormal here. Because even though he already killed many of those Monsters, those poisonous bats are still coming and attacking him. For at least 1 hour he was fighting those Monsters and he could still see those Monsters coming toward his direction. 

'It looks like those monsters are preventing me from going further than this. This is really quite suspicious. Unfortunately I did not have any stealth skill or invisible spell with me.'

Alex knew that right now at any condition he needed to advance. Most likely if he is able to do that only then he will be able to meet the real culprit behind all of this. Before anything he already decided to kill everyone of those monsters so it gives him the chance to advance further than this.
