章 53: Funny Thoughts

An Azure threat was silently floating above the ground, twisting around various trees and greenery as if dancing to an invisible melody.
The more I followed, the more this thing seemed to swirl as if it was enjoying my company.
This was the fourth day of my journey and according to the system, another three were left until I reached my destination, the Aethereum Academy.
With every step I took, I couldn't help but be lost in my thoughts.
Although through the last few days, I was attacked multiple times, it was nothing I couldn't handle.
It was even easy because the System didn't even give me a single quest during our combat, hence I was unable to earn any additional Attribute Points.
However, my mind always drifted to my inner monologue.
During this trip, I've thought and reflected on a lot of things.
I managed to think of a thousand possible scenarios for my upcoming entrance exam to the Academy, my deceased family and the village I've left behind.
However, there was one thought that consumed my mind more than any other.
What the hell was that Demon?
Recalling the night when the village was attacked, I momentarily closed my eyes, imagining the chaos and events that unfolded.

The memory of a sword slicing through the air echoed in my mind, its blade tearing into the flesh of a Demon.
This, however, wasn't the most surprising part.
The most surprising aspect was that another Demon was the one wielding the sword.
Even I knew that Demon killing another Demon was very rare and probably even considered taboo in their society.
The unfolding of that night played over and over again in my mind, each detail etched into my memory like a vivid painting.
Although all the Demons were monsters and blood-thirsty creatures, sending chaos and destruction whether they went, that Demon didn't seem like the rest.
His eyes held a flicker of calmness and small sadness, a glimpse of something that didn't fit the mold of a blood-thirsty killer.
My father had once told me that Demons have voices in their heads that whisper dark desires and fuel their violent instincts.
The stronger the Demon gets, the less influence this voice possesses, however, there wasn't even a single case where a low-rank Demon exhibited such control and compassion as the one I witnessed that night.

This, however, didn't deter me from my determination to wipe out the entire race of these creatures that were responsible for countless deaths all across the world.
So what if they could resist the voices in their heads and exhibit moments of compassion?
Not a single demon can fully free themselves from their innate violent nature and the danger they pose to humanity.
The voice, their desire to kill was too great to overlook.
"If not for them..."
Gritting my teeth, I squinted my eyes, looking at the clouds floating high in the sky.
For a second a strange thought crossed my mind...
What if it was 'that' Demon, who found our house that day and tore everything I held dear apart?
Would he have been different?

A droplet of water rolled down my cheek, gently sliding off the tip of my chin.
Ah...
It seems it has started to rain. I outstretched my palm, hoping to feel the cold raindrops against my skin, hoping that the rain would wash away the darkness that lingered in my heart.
However, not a single drop of rain fell from the sky.
"..."
Wiping away the single drop of water on my cheek, I continued walking, only looking ahead.
I didn't want to think anymore.
