章 59: Invitation

Location: Kowalski's Residence, Virek

Date and Time: July 18, 2558 – 1300 Hours

The sound of laughter fills the house as Lina and her younger brother, Eli, chase each other around the living room, their tiny feet thudding against the floor as they race from one end of the house to the other. Emily watches them from the kitchen, a soft smile on her face as she prepares lunch. I sit on the couch, my legs stretched out in front of me, watching the chaos unfold.

It's hard to believe how much has changed in the past few years. Lina is three now, and Eli just turned one last month. Life here has settled into something comfortable, something I never thought I'd have. After everything we went through during my time on active duty, the idea of a peaceful life felt like a distant dream. But here we are—two kids, a house, and a life that feels more like home with each passing day.

I still serve in the Marine Reserves, but the days of constant deployments and combat rotations are behind me. My old squad is still out there, and I keep in touch with them, but for the most part, my focus has been on Emily, the kids, and the life we've built together.

As I sip my coffee, the doorbell rings, cutting through the noise of the kids' laughter. Emily glances at me, and I stand up, setting my mug down as I head for the door.

When I open it, I'm met with the sight of a man I've only ever seen in briefings and reports—Jun, the head recruiter for the Spartan-IV Program. He stands tall, his presence commanding but not intimidating. He's dressed in simple civilian clothes, but there's no mistaking who he is.

"Tomasz Kowalski?" he asks, his voice steady.

I nod, feeling a flicker of curiosity. "That's me. Can I help you with something?"

Jun gives a small smile, though there's a seriousness in his eyes. "I'm here to offer you a chance to become something more."

I blink, taken aback by the directness of his words. "What do you mean?"

He steps forward slightly, his tone lowering as if he's about to share something confidential. "Three years ago, you and your fireteam were recommended for the Spartan-IV Program by Daniel Woods. His recommendation has been accepted, and I'm here to formally extend the offer."

I stare at him, my mind racing. The Spartan-IV Program—I'd heard whispers about it, rumors of soldiers being augmented, becoming more than human. But I never thought I'd be a candidate, especially not now, with everything that's changed in my life.

"I…" I begin, glancing back toward the house where Emily is still in the kitchen, the kids playing in the living room. "I didn't think…"

Jun holds up a hand, understanding in his expression. "It's a lot to take in. And I know you've got a family now. But this is an opportunity to be part of something bigger—to make a difference in a way few people can. The UNSC needs Spartans, and I believe you have what it takes to become one."

I feel the weight of his words settling on my shoulders, the reality of the situation hitting me. This isn't just a promotion or a new assignment—this is a chance to become a Spartan. To become something more. But it's also a choice that will change everything.

"What happens if I accept?" I ask, my voice quieter now.

"If you accept," Jun explains, "you'll attend the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science for a year of intensive training. After that, you'll undergo the augmentation process and be officially inducted into the Spartan-IV Program. Once you've completed your training, you'll return to active duty as a Spartan."

He pauses, glancing past me toward the house, where the sound of the kids playing still fills the air. "I know it's a lot to consider, especially with your family. But this isn't just about you—it's about the future of humanity. The Covenant might be gone, but there are still threats out there, and the UNSC needs Spartans to face them."

I feel a knot forming in my stomach as I consider the offer. Becoming a Spartan… it's the kind of opportunity that only comes once in a lifetime. But it's also a choice that will take me away from my family for a year, maybe longer. I'd be back on active duty, away from Emily, away from Lina and Eli. And even though the Spartan program is prestigious, I know the risks that come with it.

Jun seems to sense my hesitation. "I'm not asking for an answer right now," he says, his tone gentle. "Take some time. Talk it over with your family. But I want you to know that we believe in you, Kowalski. You've proven yourself time and again. You'd make a fine Spartan."

I nod slowly, my mind still spinning with the weight of the decision. "Thank you, sir. I'll need some time to think about it."

Jun gives me a nod, his expression understanding. "Of course. I'll be in touch."

With that, he steps back, turning to leave. I watch him go, my heart pounding in my chest as the gravity of the offer sinks in.

When I close the door, I stand there for a moment, staring at the floor as I try to process what just happened. I've been offered the chance to become a Spartan—a chance to become something more than I ever imagined. But it comes with a price.

As I make my way back into the kitchen, Emily looks up from the stove, her brow furrowing in concern. "Who was that?"

I take a deep breath, trying to find the words. "It was… someone from the UNSC. They offered me a chance to join the Spartans."

Her eyes widen slightly, and for a moment, there's a heavy silence between us. She glances at the kids, then back at me. "And what are you going to do?"

"I don't know," I admit, sinking into the chair at the kitchen table. "It's… a lot. Becoming a Spartan means a year of training, and then I'd be back on active duty. It's a huge opportunity, but… it also means being away from you and the kids."

She's quiet for a long moment, her expression thoughtful. Then she reaches out, taking my hand in hers. "I know it's a big decision. But whatever you choose, we'll figure it out together."

I squeeze her hand, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over me. "I'm going to need some time to think."
