（1） To accompany in burial: a tradition where beloved objects, pets/livestock and even live human beings—wives, concubines, servants—were buried along with the deceased in their tombs, to ensure the prosperity and happiness of the dead when they passed into the underworld. The belief was that these things and people would accompany the deceased on their journey. This tradition existed before the Qin Dynasty (pre-Warring States). Some kings in Qin Kingdom banned the practice and stopped it from being utilised in imperial burials but it continued on amongst the common folk. This banning became more widespread during the Han Dynasty, reducing the number of live burials that happened but it was still practiced in some areas.

(2) The final line from a Song Dynasty lyrical verse written by poet Yan Shu (991 AD to 1055 AD), on missing someone during late autumn.

(3) The second line from a Tang Dynasty poem written by Li Shangyin. It is still debated whether it was to a lover or a friend.
