From the very beginning, Motan didn't plan to obey Tero's commands, because he knew the stiff-minded, albeit not too rigid, Holy Knight would undoubtedly order everyone to cover for the retreating villagers. Meanwhile, he would stay behind with three others, and after Motan and the rest had led the villagers a safe distance away, he would either explode himself or perform some grand final act. If so, his dying words would likely be urging the remaining three knights to flee. If there was enough time, he would probably reminisce, before closing his eyes contentedly, imagining past lovers from his youth...
If such a cliche was the case, it could easily fill a chapter or two.
Unfortunately for him, although Tero indeed planned to follow this script, Motan seemed uninterested in letting it play out.
