I didn't mean to end up here. In the shadowy corner of the pack house library, tucked between rows of dusty bookshelves. It was the only place I could find peace in a house that felt more like a gilded cage.

Except I wasn't alone. Adrian was here with me, of course. He had come in a few minutes after I did.

He stood a few feet away, his broad frame leaning casually against the bookshelf. His presence made me feel better, though I'd never admit that to him—or myself, for that matter.

"You shouldn't be here," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Adrian smirked, the kind of smirk that said he'd weighed all the risks and decided I was worth it anyway. "Neither should you."

I rolled my eyes, hugging my arms around myself. "I live here, remember? In the prison suite with the velvet curtains."
