章 22: 22. Young Fairies
After the party is over, Makarov guides Alex to Fairy Tail's male dormitory. It is where some single male members use to stay because it's cheap and they can stay with their Guild Mates.
The building is located far from other buildings in the town. It's placed on the outskirts because the Mages often train their magic there which can be dangerous for other people if they are too close.
"Oh, it's nicer than I thought."
Alex never knows Fairy Tail has a male dormitory. He thought they only had a female dormitory because it's never shown in the story. Natsu also doesn't live in a dormitory, so he thought they don't have a male dormitory.
Currently, Alex is having a tour around the dormitory that's named Fairy House with the dorm keeper which is a middle-aged man called Joshua.
"Every male member of Fairy Tail is allowed to live here. But there are rules here and those who break it will be banned from living here again." Mr. Joshua says it while they walk.
"So strict!"
"Well, because we don't want the dormitory to be destroyed." Mr. Joshua has a sweat drop on his forehead.
"Huh?"
Alex is confused until Mr. Joshua explains the rules. They are mostly normal rules used in most boarding houses. Even the no fighting rule and being responsible for their rooms' cleanliness are normal too.
That's until Makarov says that some people in the past were fighting in the dorm using magic, so a big part of the dorm was destroyed. Some people also didn't clean their rooms until they became literal trash bins.
"Even if they were boys, weren't they being too irresponsible?"
"But those things really happened. That's why now the boy dormitory has very strict rules compared to the girl dormitory. But most of the male members still live here. They've become very obedient after the strict rules were applied." Mr. Joshua smiles while saying the last sentence as if he finally has the peace he always wanted.
"I guess most of them are single men, right?"
"It's as you thought. And well, it might not apply to you now, but when you get older, please don't bring girls to the dorm. It's also stated in the rule, but I just want you to take note of it."
"It really doesn't concern me now, but well, understood."
Alex finishes the necessary paperwork after choosing a room from some remaining rooms. He chose a room on the top floor, the 3rd floor because he thinks the top floor will be the most peaceful even though going up and down every day might be a hassle.
After paying this month's rent which is 100 thousand jewels. It's the same as the female dormitory, Fairy Hill's rent.
But it's more expensive than average rooms in the town. Rooms for male are usually cheaper with the average being just 50 thousand jewels. It's just that their rooms are smaller and they don't get food.
The reason Fairy House's rent is higher is because they will get breakfast and laundry service every day. Breakfast is one thing, but the laundry service is a deal breaker for most of the boys.
Most of them are either too lazy to wash their clothes or they are just very bad at it. That's why most of them still choose to live in the dorm even if it's twice as expensive as the rented rooms in town.
Alex finally can rest now. He immediately goes to sleep after washing himself. Luckily, the dorm keeper always cleans the empty room in case anyone suddenly comes to rent them, so Alex can use the room immediately.
The battle with Makarov really exhausted him and he was just traveling on foot for a long time. The accumulated fatigue finally kicked in now that he is relaxed after deciding to live here for the years to come, so he falls asleep immediately.
Although he never thought he would sleep for more than 30 hours. He wakes up in the morning, but it's the 2nd morning since he slept in the dorm. Even the dorm keeper almost thought he was dead in his room.
"HAHAHAHA! It's my first time seeing someone sleep for a day and 2 nights." Laxus laughs loudly when Alex comes to the Guild after selling the materials he collected.
"Tsk! So noisy. I was just really tired, alright?" Alex is very embarrassed now because everyone is laughing at him.
After a while, the loud laughs finally die down and Laxus asks what Alex will do now.
"Do you want to take a job immediately?"
"Not yet. I have just arrived in Magnolia and have just joined after going on a 7 months trip, you know. Before taking jobs, I want to relax for a while and more than that, I need to familiarize myself with the Guild and town. Man, I don't even know where the clothing stores are."
"So you want to tour around the town, right?"
"Yeah. I always enjoy sightseeing at the places I visit, so I'm actually eager to walk around the town now."
"Want me to give you a tour?" Laxus gives that offer while smiling smugly, but Alex feels disgusted by it.
"I don't want to have a date with a boy."
"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN BY A DATE?!"
"IT WILL LOOK LIKE THAT TO OTHER PEOPLE."
Alex and Laxus start quarrelling like close friends even though they have just known each other. Maybe it's because their ages are close, so they can feel closer to each other easily.
"STOP IT!"
A knock on the head from Makarov's giant hands is enough to stop the useless fight.
"Laxus, don't you have a job today?"
"Eh? Ah, right! I forgot! It's almost time to go. Damn newbie! It's because you distracted me. I'll leave now then." Yellow electricity comes out of Laxus's body before he runs out of the Guild at a high speed.
"Why is it my fault that you forget your job?" Alex has a tick mark on his forehead while looking at the running Laxus.
"Alex, if you want to have a tour around Magnolia, then I'll ask someone to guide you."
"It's fine, Master, I can walk around alone."
"No, let her guide you. There aren't many jobs she can do now, so I am just giving her a job. The Guild will pay for this job, so you don't need to spend anything."
Alex quickly understands what Makarov is trying to do. "If it's someone who can't take that many jobs yet, then is she the youngest member?"
"Oh, you've heard about her, huh?"
"Yeah, from Laxus. Though I don't know her name yet, I know that she's a girl younger than me."
"Then I'll introduce you later."
Soon, a little girl with brown hair enters the Guild building. Alex has expected this, but he still feels strange seeing a small Cana that still looks very innocent because the teenage Cana is a heavy drunkard.
"Master, do you call me?"
"Alex, this is Cana Alberona, our youngest member. Cana, this is Alex.... Uh..."
"Alexander Sterling."
"Right, Alexander Sterling, also known as Alex. He is our newest member. Alex has just come to Magnolia, so he isn't familiar with the town yet. I want you to give him a tour around the town. This is an official job from the Guild, can you do it?"
"A new member?" Cana asks while looking shyly at Alex.
"Hi, I'll be in your care." Alex offers a handshake which Cana takes shyly while nodding.
He really can't understand how this cute and shy little girl turns into that sexy drunkard. The only reasons that he can think of are the Guild's environment and because she doesn't dare to tell Gildarts that she is his daughter.
Cana takes her job seriously. She shows and explains all important places in the town to Alex even though she's shy.
Alex also asks questions and talks about other things with Cana while they walk around to make her feel more comfortable with him.
He feels like he's used to taking care of younger kids now because of his experience with Ultear, Gray, and Lyon. Though compared to them, the current Cana is easier to get along with.
"Oh, you can do fortune telling with your Magic Cards? Is it accurate?"
Alex and Cana are having a meal in a restaurant after walking around for almost 2 hours. It's lunch time, so Alex takes Cana to eat and rest in this restaurant.
"I-I don't know if it's very accurate, but it's correct most of the time."
"Woah, that's dope. Can you try it on me then?"
"O-okay, maybe later in the Guild." Cana looks around with just her eyes while her face is looking down. She is too shy to use her Magic Card here in front of strangers.
"Alright. Let's just enjoy our meal here and continue to walk around the town later."
Alex wants to encourage Cana on her mission to tell Gildarts the truth. But to do that, he needs to get closer to her, close enough so she'll tell him the truth or he won't be able to help her.
