Every girl dreams of getting married to the man of her dreams - a prince charming. One whom she could fall wholeheartedly for the perfect gentleman. Princess Elena was no different. After waiting a month since Prince Frederick's proposal, today was finally her big day. As the only princess, her wedding preparation was top-notch. Elena was the second out of three children born of King Benedict and Queen Naphta of Austeria, the only daughter. She was adored by everyone.
Elena looks at herself in the mirror for the eleventh time to calm herself. Elena could not have any sleep that night, as she kept thinking of her life outside the palace walls. A life without her family, a life with a new one. Although her new home may not be far away, she would still miss the palace. The place she grew up. Elena turned to look at the wedding gown she was wearing. She pictured her groom's reaction to her walking down the aisle.
Her groom, Prince Frederick, was a charming man. Tall and fair, he was smart and eloquent. As the spare to the throne of Kensburg, he was famous for his wild travels. Maybe this, among many, was what captivated Elena to agree to the arrangement. Elena met Prince Frederick met at her brother, Jael's birthday celebration. Elena had participated in many activities and before dawn, all she wanted was to go back to her Chamber to rest. The celebration was almost ending, and the gifts were being presented. When it reached her turn, she walked with ease towards him with a smile.
"Happy Birthday charming Prince," Elena teased with a wink, "Everyone's giving you gifts of gold and silver. I knew giving you a piece of jewellery wouldn't be enough."
Prince Jael raised his brows. He was used to his sister's comments. Her charismatic nature and audacity made her his favourite sibling. He waited to see her gift.
"Anyway, not to give a long speech like Dad here," Elena continued, making her father chuckle, "here's an embroidery design I made for you. It's a robe in your favourite colour. I spent quite some time doing it. I hope you like it."
Jael was more than surprised. His sister was everything.
Among the audience astounded by the gift was Prince Frederick, who could not take his eyes away from Elena. She was beautiful. In his many travels, he had visited kingdoms and territories. He had seen different families, but this royal family stood in everything - they were free and happy, and loved by everyone in their Kingdom. He knew right then he was going to pick a wife, and what better bride than Princess Elena, the second child of King Benedict?
After the birthday party, Prince Frederick approached her for a brief discussion. Her intellect astounded him to the point he fell in love immediately. He looked forward to more conversations with her. He wanted to know more about her. As time passed, they exchanged letters and he came regularly to see her. Six months later, his intentions became clear.
When Prince Frederick proposed to Elena privately, she didn't know what to say. She had to ask for time to think about it. Mariana was her best friend, bubbly and wise. Even if she was just a personal maid to Elena, Elena consulted with her for a reply. The next day, the young Prince arrived early in the morning, nervous about her reply. She finally said yes to him. The families were consulted and they were equally thrilled about the wedding. There was not a better match than the one between two powerful kings, and also good friends.
Now, today, Elena wondered if she was making the right decision. She questioned the aching feeling in her heart that something would go wrong. She looked at her dress one more time through the mirror. She had just finished dressing up, and yet she still felt nauseous. Suddenly, she felt someone grab her waist, whispering to her ears from behind.
"If you look at yourself one more time, Elena, you might turn into a frog." A voice whispered from behind her. She jolted and turned to find Jael behind her.
Typical of her brother. Crown Prince Jael was everything to her. He was tall and muscular, a warrior with a heart of stone. But when it came to his only sister, he was as soft as silk.
"Jael! When did you come in?"
Elena was sure he wasn't supposed to be in her chambers that early but she was glad he was there. Her older brother was her favourite sibling.
"My sister's getting married and you didn't think I would come to check her?"
She became emotional.
" I'd hug you right now but I don't want to mess up my hair, " Elena joked.
" You look beautiful. Well, at least today. You always look terrible, I'm surprised today. "
She punched him.
" Really? Of course, I'm beautiful. Look at me."
He covered his eyes
" I don't wanna look too much. Frederick may get jealous."
" Come on. Now, how did you get in? Mum specifically said I was to get ready and stay still till it was time. "
He rolled his eyes.
" You're asking a Crown Prince? Oh please, piece of cake."
" By piece of cake, you don't mean flirting with Mariana to let you in, right?"
He grinned,
" Maybe."
She punched his shoulders. Even if she was just Elena's maid, Mariana had a huge crush on her brother and Jael took advantage of this most of the time.
"Come on! I've told you to stop flirting with her. She's my best friend."
" I had to see you. Mum wouldn't let me. But don't worry, it was worth it."
" You better not flirt with Mari when I'm gone, okay."
" Fine, I won't."
They were silent for a while.
" What about Alex?"
Alexander was her younger brother, the last child. She was five years old when he was born. He was a reserved child and always did things his way. Her mother, the Queen, preferred him though, as she always saw his actions as perfect.
"He's outside, practising your wedding choreography with a bunch of artists."
Elena was surprised,
" Really?"
" You wish," Jael replied and laughed. Picking up a piece of apple, he continued, "Haven't seen him."
"Oh," Elena answered and lowered her eyes. She deeply thought he'd come to wish her like Jael. He only did two days before, after her father had forced him.
"I'll check up on him later. Besides, when you're gone, I'll have no one to mess with."
"Haha, tough luck. You're stuck with Alex till you find a Bride."
He scoffed,
" A woman? To replace you? In five years, maybe."
Elena rolled her eyes,
" Mum and Dad would be wanting an heir soon. You better start making good use of those flirting skills."
" I don't know, I've not found someone special yet. I don't know how something unique."
" Literally every unmarried female in this kingdom and beyond wants to be with you. How hard is it?"
"Stop being all mum over me. In a hurry to get rid of me? Well..."
Their discussion was interrupted by a scream. A female voice, followed by the shattering of a glass.
