The rain still poured from the pitch-black sky - which worked for me this time since there were fewer people to offend. I used my cell phone to light the alleyway and search for my jacket but couldn’t find it. My heart lurched when I saw my favorite T-shirt, an Offspring tour souvenir, sopping wet with mud and rain. I kicked it aside. I kicked it all aside, searching for my leather jacket. It had to be in the apartment.

“Excusez-moi, Madame Belan,” I practically shouted as I dashed past the woman in the vestibule and took the stairs two at a time.

“She is not there!” she called after me. But I kind of knew that. Knew Miri wouldn’t stay, not after I’d - I shook my head. I’d get this key thing, or whatever, get Helena out of my life for good and then I’d get Miri back. I had to get her back.
