章 5: Replaceable

Screams. It filled the aimless streets which seemed more like the void if a perfectionist were to describe it. Cobblestone walkways were abandoned, corroded from how atrocious the treatment inflicted onto it was. Uncared for and neglected, for what appeared to be a long period of time was the buildings, even though humans inhabited them to this day. Once gorgeous brick walls, standing mighty and tall were now vandalized and ruined; unfixable. Stone grey clouds, gathered into large clumps, covered the only thing that could really shine brightly despite the misery below. An outlined circular white glow surrounded the clouds, the radiance of the object, fading away to move onto another place, giving up. Apart from all of this, something seemed, amiss. Nobody was around, maybe shut up inside their cottages but that seemed unlikely to confirm. It was strange though, something was in the alleyway. An alleyway covered in litter and rotten fleece, ready to spread infections to the unfortunate. What was there, it wouldn't be clear from the growing mist, choking to whom used it for oxygen.

There layed a child, a young child, to say the least, wrecked and drenched from the ongoing storm that was leaving its mark on the already-ruined village. Its head hung low, shivering from the thin breeze blowing across its bare skin, a bit nippy from the numbing temperature on that night. Their back rested on the chilling bricked wall, tinted a depressing grey: everything in this place seemed that way. Additionally, the air was crisp and bitter, enough to make one inhale it as poison, a deleterious poison. Coughs filled the air, indisposed gasps for breath left the child's mouth.

Footsteps drew near, the clinging of boots echoing throughout the silent alleyway. Shallow breathes were silent despite the incapability of the human lungs to adapt to the sudden atmosphere change. Once the figure appeared before the child, the younger human being didn't even get to react,

Dead.

Blood spattered across the dull corner of the town, rain pouring down on the fresh stains. The child limbs were torn apart in an instant, organs spilling out from it's upper region. Eyes weren't functioning anymore, widened in a deadly shock of unexpectedly. A lifeless corpse dropped, slain, the light flashed out of it's eyes. It's neck creaked before tilting into an inhuman position, deceased.

Shouts and screams now ran through the coming pathways, Demon Slayers. A click of the tongue was the only sound made by the unknown figure, their grown out golden locks swiping into their face. Pale fingers brushed them behind their ears, what seemed to be, 'teleporting', away from the scene was the pure limitation of its spine-chilling momentum. Before the slayers could realise, they had just let another innocent life slip away from their grasp. One more innocent life lost to such sinful creatures. Some call it treason, some call it karma. Who knew one event could change the entire game, this sick game they were forced to play. Puppeteers pulling the strings with such poker faces, merciless.

It's unbelievable to think three could be so cruel, no, seven for a matter of fact. These people were the strongest of beasts, not a single soul lived to tell the tale. As time moves on, more and more do not fulfil their worth, only to be replaced. Everyone was replaceable. Everyone.
