章 14: The End
I awoke only a few hours ago, naked as the day of my birth. There were bodies all around me, all of them either dead or asleep. I do not know where I am.
All I can see now are roots and a black cloudless sky.
I wandered for a long time, attempting in vain to wake others that I found.
I am the only one. One of the bodies held a journal. I am writing in it now. I wanted the world to know my fate, and the fate of Darkwood.
When I reached the summit of the great tree, I found a Being. I cannot describe her. All I know is that she is powerful and seductive. I wanted to submit to it.
But, I did not.
When I touched it, I was filled with a warmth. It was like being in the womb, an eternal sanctuary of bliss and comfort. I forced myself away from it. Nothing has ever been even half as difficult.
When I stumbled into a nearby clearing, I found an old comrade of mine, Maciek, though I can't remember how my memories came back. He was a soldier, he was in my squadron. He was asleep like all the others, but he held a flamethrower. Poor man got so close the ending it all.
I attempted to wake him.
I wanted to give him a chance.
Instead, I was forced to tear it from his arms. I collapsed then, and felt myself reduced to nothing. I am faced now with only one choice. I have logged everything that I can remember. Once I am done, I will fling this journal into the abyss below. Maybe, just maybe someone will find it. If that someone is you, tell the world of what transpired here.
Tell them that I'm sorry for what I deemed necessary. There is simply no other way now.
I will burn it all away.
