Jenny was a saint, taking the kids away to play, so Ellis and I could talk. And get up to whatever else might happen the night of our reunion.

I should have been shaken by what happened back at the other house. It was meant to be a safe house but didn’t feel that way anymore. Not after the direct attack.

A direct attack! Someone had come to kill me and the kids. Someone from the government, overseeing the protection of Carl, who could bring the whole Diaz dynasty down, not just Bethany.

Most people would have been total basket cases after something like that. Especially when responding the way I had. Even if I hadn’t got to the extremes my instincts were pushing me toward.

I might have felt differently if I’d gone with my first thought and ended the man where he stood. Probably not though. At least this way I’d still be able to sleep at night. I didn’t know if it was mercy or empathy that stayed my hand, maybe I never would.
