章 3: Pained eyes
Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) rooftop, next to the batlamp.
"I thought your work was done for today." Officer Gordon, who was wearing a trench coat, took a puff of cigarette. "Even if you don't need to grow taller, your Robin shouldn't have reached fixed height yet. It's not good for children to stay late at night."
Robin who understood the meaning, glared at the the officer. If it were Tim or Grayson in front of him, he would've already slashed with a knife.
Batman, who was accused of child abuse remained calm: "The woman who was at the murder scene, take me to her."
Gordon nodded and signaled Batman to follow him. He was not surprised that Batman found the clues so easily, after all he is Gotham's Dark Knight. He would've been surprised if Batman didn't ask him this question.
Gordon drove his car, while Batman and Robin followed in Bat mobile.
Driving all the way to the eastern wealthy residence area of Gotham, Gordon parked the car infront of an apartment building. He took Batman and Robin to the apartment on the 29th floor quietly. Robin had already hacked all the cameras and electrical equipments of the building.
Gordon took Dark Knight with him:
"I left the woman's name out of the case as not to implicate her. Gorham's too chaotic and a witness who has seen the killer will only increase the chaos. I have talked with her many times, but she refuses to talk to the police and says she will only tell Batman."
Bruce, under Batman's mask nodded.
After cleaning the house, Anne Gnever was busy washing the dishes. Yesterday was too too bad for her. Thinking about killing she witnessed with her own eyes, her soul trembles violently. It's thanks to the police officer that she has to not face media and the inquiries.
The bell of the apartment rang.
Anne looked warily at the door and went to take a look. Confirming it was Police Officer, she opened the door and found Officer Gordon in front of her, but with him was another person, Batman.
Anne and Gordon were sitting opposite to each other, and Batman was standing behind Grodon.
Grodon spoke first: "I have brought Batman. Now you can speak."
Anne was hesitant and looked at Batman from time to time. Although she hid her glare, but it was not hidden in front of the police chief and Dark Knight.
Grodon understood what was going on, another fanatical fan of Batman. The corners of his mouth twitched.
Batman broke the awkward silence. "You can speak freely, Grodon can be trusted."
Although he said it, but Robin through the earphone, Afu in the Batcave and Grodon siting on the sofa, twitched the corners of their mouth. Do you Batman have no shame when speaking a lie. They have known Batman for a long time or know him personally, but what everyone agrees on equally is that Batman doesn't trust anyone, not even himself.
Anne, who didn't know the truth nodded. Thinking about the that inhuman scene, she felt terrified but she held on. She explained:
"I saw him with my own eyes. He seems to be a mutant. He can fly and control others. He killed everyone brutally." she explained how she saw those criminals getting killed, his use of powers, the inhuman torture and everything.
Gordon listened to everything, and even he shuddered. "Did you see his face, I mean the Demon."
"No, he's not a demon."
These words received Batman's attention. Dark Knight listened to the whole talk before without giving any response, but Anne's strong denial got his real attention.
Gordon was also surprised, and asked: "What do you mean by that, Anne. Do you think he's a hero."
He should have thought that Anne might be one of those who considered Demon a hero. After all, he saved her life.
Anne didn't reply to the police officer and looked at their Gorham's Guardian, Batman. "Batman, I saw him with my own eyes, he's not a demon or a monster. He's just a kid like any other kid out there."
Both Batman and Grodon were stunned. Although Batman immediately got his composure back the next second, but this information still stunned him. He asked seriously looking into the victim's eyes:
"What do you mean by the word kid?"
Being stared by those dangerous eyes covered by a helmet, Anne was under huge pressure. But she still looked above in Dark Knight's eyes and replied: "I saw him with my own eyes. His face was covered by a simple mask but I am sure he was just a 15-16 year old boy. He had blue eyes eyes and a little curly hair. He killed those guys, but I saw a pain in his eyes which was bigger than the one those guys were receiving."
Both Batman and Gordon were quiet. Officer Gordon asked unwilling: "How sure can you be? He can also be a mutant who can change his appearnce." It's hard for him to associate the killer demon with a kid.
Anne was calm when she was asked this question as if expecting it. She looked into Police officer's eyes: "Officer, do you have children?"
The question didn't seem relevant, but Gordon still replied: "I have one, a daughter."
Anne then continued: "I am also a mother. I have seen that huge sadness and pain in those blue eyes, that only belongs to children. Those eyes were quiet but screaming at the same time."
As a mother, she has seen such emotions in the eyes of her children. Although incomparable to the kid, but they were the same. The child was maybe trying to find his mother or a relative's shadow in her. And she rejected him ruthlessly without knowing anything.
Gordon was speechless. But he continued asking as it was his duty: "What did you saw more. Tell about his appearance."
Anne thought for a long time and started giving his description. She didn't saw that whole face, but some features could be seen. "I think I have seen those features in someone. They look so similar."
"Who."
Anne thought for a while, and suddenly a face came to her mind: "Bruce Wayne."
