章 14: The Cruor Bow
The icicle arrow noiselessly disappeared into the labyrinth. Cutting a white streak across the air, it hit a joint in its limbs. Unfortunately for Sunny, he couldn't see the monster's full body from his hiding place, so instead of a vital organ, he settled for a limb.
The bone shattered immediately due to being enhanced by his shadow. The monster shrieked. It tried to move but fell immediately to the ground. Now that he has a good look at it, there is a ghastly wound on its back, missing both of its pincers.
Touch of Frost did its job splendidly. The blood leaking from the wound froze, which might be good for the crabbie temporarily, but the effect of the arrow slowly penetrated the inner parts of its body. Veins froze, turning blue. Its eye became hollow, and after a while, the beast was dead.
It took around five minutes for it to die, which is enough for an un-wounded, awakened beast to kill him.
'Lucky me, it was wounded.'

Sunny's eye perked up a little at the last message.
Sunny didn't try to collect the soul fragments or harvest meat. The creature created quite a commotion before dying. His shadow has already located another scavenger coming towards him.
Dismissing his bow, which now looked a little red, he moved to the next location.
After the sun had disappeared behind the horizon, the black waters surged again. Sunny was already sitting on the stone platform, looking at his bow.
His bow, which previously had a woody texture, now had a bloody layer on it. A crimson hue emitted from the string. It was the enchantment of the bow.
He has to kill nightmare creatures above dormant rank for the enchantment to work. Also, for it to count a kill, it needs to be one-shoted; he cannot use two arrows to kill one nightmare creature. The more the kill count rises, the stronger the bow becomes, with a maximum limit of ten.
The enchantment just had one flaw: if one of his arrows doesn't hit the target, the counter will reset.
How in the hell did the spell understand what his target was, he had no idea.

He killed another scavenger after the first one. He could have tried to kill more, but without a sword, his options were limited.
With that last thought, Sunny closed his eyes and went to sleep.

In the night, a sudden storm descended upon the dark sea. Sunny was stirred awake by the shadow in time to prepare himself for the crushing winds and the pelting rain.
Staying low so as not to be blown over the edge of the platform, Sunny cupped his hands and waited until they became filled with rainwater. Then he raised them to his mouth and greedily drank.
Strikes of lightning illuminated everything above the churning sea. If anyone were to see Sunny now, they would have noticed a wide grin on his face.
The storm continued to rampage for several hours. Sunny crouched in the middle of the platform, enduring its rage. More than once, a tall wave would crash into the headless knight's neck, threatening to wash him away. But Sunny held tight to the deep grooves in the stone surface of the platform, sticking to it like glue.
By morning, when the storm finally dissipated, all of his muscles were sore.
But there was no time to waste.
Sunny slid over the edge and nimbly started to climb down.
He headed towards one of the paths that were supposed to lead him towards Nephis and Cassie.
Sunny sent his shadow over him. It moved ahead of him, scouting the path.
"Say, don't you need a name? How about Gloomy?....hmm don't like that, huh. How about Blackie then?.....What? Too edgy?....Alright I will call you Ben Dover then...…"
This time, the shadow stopped and looked at him seriously.
"Alright, alright. I was just kidding. Let's settle for Gloomy."
The shadow nodded and went back to scouting.
"Ben Dover is a shitty name, right?"
Gloomy agreed enthusiastically.
Chuckling, Sunny continued to move ahead.
His shadow moved ahead, gliding across the mud and sometimes jumping from wall to wall.
Sunny suddenly stopped, and his shadow stopped in response too. The mud in front of him moved, and a massive pincer shot out of the ground and tore through the air.
Sunny barely dodged the pincer. Doing a back roll to create distance between him and the pincer, he grabbed his bow and arrow, which he had already summoned before.
The pincer closed in front of him with an aloud "clack.".
In front of him, the attacker has finally shown itself. It climbed from under the mud, casting a vast shadow over him. Its tiny eyes were full of hunger and malice.
Sunny, on the other hand, was already running away.
His shadow attached itself to his body, and his speed increased significantly. The wounded scavenger tried to chase him, but his prey was already far ahead.
After creating some distance, Sunny stopped. The crabbie was still trying to chase him, and the distance was decreasing. Sunny immediately got his arrow ready and took aim.
A moment later, Sunny released his finger, allowing the string to slide off them on its own. The icicle arrow tore through the air.
The arrow pierced through the monster's tiny eye, sinking in deep. The other eye of the monster narrowed.
The scavenger grew still.
Sunny held his breath, ready to dash away. Touch of Frost was doing its job, slowly freezing the brain of the beast. After a few painful seconds, the monster fell head-first.

Sunny drew in a raspy, painful breath.
Even though his situation was much better than the original Sunny, he still received a cut.
Sunny looked at his shadow, which had already returned from the corpse of the scavenger. An arrow enhanced by his shadow was indeed powerful.
His bow turned into a deeper shade of crimson.
"Cool huh?"
Gloomy looked away.
