章 6: EP6

He took a steady breath. She couldn't deny that she still held his heart captive.

As before, she tied her shoulder-length dark brown hair back with a strap. A black leather jacket was draped over his shoulders, and jeans stretched comfortably from his long, muscular legs to well-worn western boots. He was as handsome as she remembered him, but much taller, majestic, and real than the photos Argos had sent him.

She focused on Diana's mouth. How many women had he kissed since he kissed her? His veins turned to ice as an uncontrollable jealousy swept over him.

Was She already mated? His stomach clenched at the thought. She turned her gaze into his eyes. His dark brown eyes turned into black quartz, angered with a bit of anxiety.

Did he know her? She sure did. If he caught her in a wolf costume, she'd know him every day. But how had she found him? of course… of course… the fact that somehow a red wolf lives in the Cascades got the big press coverage, even though none of them should. Fantastic. That's how he found her. He must realize the predicament he is facing and the danger to all. That's why she tried to get him out of the zoo. If he turned into a human on the new moon, it could be used to prove that legendary werewolves really existed.

Did he have a plan? He moved his hands up and down the black wrought-iron posts. His movements hypnotized her. What was his plan?

"I don't know, but it definitely catches his attention. Do you think it once belonged to him?"

"Hmm, now that sounds like an obvious possibility. And he wants him back so he can be released back into the wild. I want him checked out and monitored. He's probably one of those crazy animal rights activists. I'm sure he's safer here with a good diet and will hunt him down."

Doesn't he understand that there is no one? Also, where can a male find red to mate? He'd be stranded with skinny coyotes."

Joe laughed. "I guess it doesn't matter to him as long as it's done."

He let out a low growl.

"Don't think he likes your proposal," Thompson joked.

He turned his attention back to Derek. It looked kissable. The man had grown a tall man, but his eyes remained dark and foreboding - even more so now.

Diana lifted her chin as if to mock him to say what she thought of him, but she continued to stroke the bars. She realized at that moment that she could smell the fire. The urge to mate with him would be as natural to him as breathing air or blinking.

His gaze met hers, the depths of his eyes burning with lust. Then he frowned and turned around. His long walk took him away from her within seconds. She wanted to shout at him to release him. But worst of all, she wanted him to mate with her, to fulfill the insatiable desire fueled by the sight of her, to have her as his wife forever.

"She knows him, okay, don't you think so, Joe?"

"Yes, just like a dog recognizes its owner."

He shook his head very quickly in anger, a growl roaring in his throat.

Both Thompson's and Joe's mouths fell open.

"God, I swear he thought you insulted him," Thompson said.

She went back to her lair, a concrete house hidden from everyone's sight. She was right to insult. A dog. And her master Diana? He growled again.

Then she thought what would happen, and dammit… as a woman, she could open the door to the wolf's den, albeit naked. As long as they don't lock. Why would they lock it? The wolves couldn't just go.

Big Red approached the entrance of the cave. He growled so ferociously that he immediately backed off.

The two men laughed. Thompson studied the study. "You can see who's wearing the pants in the family."

He lay on the ground, resting his head on his paws. But don't they lock the doors to keep others out? Sure. To protect the stupid visitors who want to pet the beautiful wolves.

Bella lifted her nose and howled. He howled for losing his freedom, for losing his red wolf family, for missing the love of the grays that had engulfed him, and for his love for Diana—a desperate, pathetic love for a lupus garou. never have as a wife.

"It's howling for him, don't you think?" she asked.

"Yeah, I would think so if I didn't know any better." Thompson folded his arms, his blue eyes studying her sympathetically.

"Hey, Thompson," a new male voice said, "there's a guy named Victor Smith on the phone saying they have transfer papers to get our new little lady out of here."

Bella's ears pricked. His heartbeat increased so fast that he was afraid of having an early heart attack. Vike arranged for Diana to come for him. Damn them both. He growled in jealousy.

Thompson nodded. "Rosa isn't leaving here without confirming that this man has the legal documents to carry her. I haven't heard anything about it."

The men put down the pen and Bella closed her eyes. When the zoo closed for the night and all the staff went home, he would transform into human form and hopefully escape the moat before anyone could deliver him to Viki.

She couldn't believe she was safe from him after all these years, a mistake in the woods could cost her much more than her freedom. As Viki's spouse, life would be a living hell.

Diana suspected that she would return to him in the dark of night. She had to escape before that.

He slept quietly for a while, letting the darkness come. But in that darkness, the nightmares that haunted him forever returned - the scorching heat, the white flames, the suffocating smoke, the fire that killed the entire red lupus garou family. Then a gray wolf came to the edge of the stony river, almost twice the size of Diana, a tall, immature beauty of a pack of women. Without hesitation, he grabbed her by the neck and swam across the river to save her.

For a moment, she felt a sense of peace.

Then, instinctively, something in the wolves' pen woke him up. A low, menacing growl? The sound of a padded footstep creeping towards him?

Big Red opened his eyes as he took a step towards her. She was so locked up, she was so tired and still so dazed now that she didn't immediately realize what had happened. He looked at his changed form. A red wolf no longer had the warm fur, four legs, or long nose. The woman now lying on the icy concrete floor was a cold, naked, growling Big Red woman.

Damn, he hadn't calculated the days of the waning crescent moon correctly. The new moon had arrived, and no orbs lit the way, save for the stars sprinkled over the black satin night.

This time Big Red snarled at him, revealing his canines and a few front teeth. His tail stood straight, as was the hair on the back of his neck and back. She got up slowly from her lying position, but she could only crouch because of the low ceiling in the study.

stand up, open arms,It was supposed to make him think he was bigger and stronger. But it was very cramped. He looked at her, frightened her as he was trying to do to her now.

In her current form, she hated to advance on him. He had to move slowly so as not to frighten her further. Couldn't kill him, but what a mess.

How could she explain how a woman got into the wolves' den and survived a violent attack when she decided to bite? How could she explain why she was naked? And how could he explain how Rosa disappeared? Moreover, how quickly could he recover if he injured her?

Did you think of the legendary werewolf woman?

As much as she tries to escape from him and find her perfect human mate, she tries to possess him. So what drives you, Diana?"

Female human hatred. Reproduction of the species if it can find a suitable mate. But none of the other females in his herd were of the age he wanted. Just Bella. And looking for another of his own kind - that is, of the red wolf kind, because that's what his heart set on - proved unachievable.

It was like searching for red wolves in the wild in America. Almost impossible to find. And no other species of wolves would. It must have been the red wolf inside him that had drawn her to him.

"I've heard rumors that you killed your own brother," Diana said, avoiding Argos' question.

"Which one?"

Diana looked at him in disbelief. "Was there more than one?"

"Two, they both died before you joined the herd. But no, they were accidental. When he was young, a mountain lion killed his youngest triplets. He had gone away from the herd for a hunt and the others had not reached him in time. His eldest brother died in a violent flood. The tree was uprooted, his skull was stabbed. "Healers said he died before the river pulled him under. But Viki learned her bullying from that brother, the meanest, most vicious wolf known as lupus garou. Just surviving a frown has made the viki as strong as it is today."

Diana made a disgruntled throaty sound. He had always wondered why the wiki was so aggressive and controlling, but to him that didn't justify his behavior. "Are the others ready?"

"Yes."

"Viki isn't coming for him later, is he?" Diana pulled on her leather jacket.

"No. He's the bastard leader, not a fool."

"Some of us would argue that point."

Viki sent Diana to get Bella back because she wanted to emphasize that Diana would get her back, but Bella belongs to Viki. The thought coagulated Diana's dinner, which were half-raw burgers hastily eaten like a greasy lump in the pit of her stomach.
