章 13: Insect Problems
Kane was sitting at the table and said "What happened?" Angel grinded his teeth and said "Some guy in a costume attacked us!" Kane exhaled a mouthful of smoke and said "What kind of costume? An Avenger?" Reiner shook his head and said "No. Red and blue, he shot webs and stuff."
Kane raised a brow and said "Webs? Like a spider?" Angel and Reiner nodded and Kane sighed as he said "What are the losses?" Angel flipped a book and said "10 alien weapons and 20 lower leveled staff."
Kane rubbed his eyes and said "You haven't done anything?" Reiner said "We weren't at the scene and we can't find him at all. It seems like he only operates at night." Kane said "Where was this?" Angel said "Queens." Kane tapped on the table and said "Stage a fake trade off tonight in Queens, I want you both at the scene. Fake trade means no weapons, just bring sealed boxes, have our staff on both sides. I want to catch this spider in my own web."
Angel and Reiner nodded and Kane said "Chazz, how is the progress of taking over the market?" Chazz got serious and said "Good. We're currently splitting the market between 3 forces. Us, Various other small forces forming a cohesive front against our aggressive tactics and... Kingpin."
Kane took a drag saying "Tell me about Kingpin." Chazz started "Kingpin is basically the boss of all the underground organizations. He controls everything, except us of course, but other than that he deals with everything else." Chazz paused and finished "Basically he is number one of the underground market scene."
Kane narrowed his eyes and muttered "Number one eh...." he grinned maliciously and added "Not for long... Megan, survey the cameras across the city. If you seen even a bowling pin, I want to hear about it." Megan replied "Understood."
Kane nodded and looked at Angel and Reiner before saying "Stage it tomorrow night. Make sure it's real, don't look suspicious. Our prey has to be fooled, understood?" Angel and Reiner nodded and Kane looked at Chazz once more before saying "You formed an agreement with these various cohesive groups?"
Chazz shook his head and Kane grinned as he said "Kill them all, gathering together like that will only lead to unfavorable situations. I want their corpses on the morning news, take Angel and Reiner with you and use the weapons we're selling..."
Kane paused before adding "Perhaps, you can use this as an opportunity to demonstrate their power to our buyers. Get what I'm trying to say?" Chazz grinned and nodded, Kane waved "Angel, Reiner. Step out for a moment, I would like to talk to Chazz alone." Angel and Reiner stepped out of the base and went outside.
Chazz was nervous and Kane said "In Purgatory, you are the only normal person. How does that make you feel?" Chazz said honestly "I hate it." Kane retorted "Doesn't it make you all the more impressive?" Chazz was confused and said "What do you mean?"
Kane cleared his throat and said "Everything you've done up to now, it was all without powers. Only using your skills and grit, wouldn't having powers destroy all the pride in building everything normally?"
Chazz was thoughtful before finally sighing "If there was someone you just couldn't beat no matter what you had but powers could give you the chance what would you do?" Kane said "Take them, naturally. So you..." Chazz nodded and said "It was my wife.." he clenched his fists and continued "One of Kingpin's lackeys took her from me! I want to destroy him!"
Kane was silent as he rolled a syringe, from his pocket, along the table right in front of Chazz. Chazz looked up and Kane said "I experimented with something. You might die or you'll develop powers. What it is, is a first iteration of a serum I... came across. Of course I modified it, squeezing out as much stability as I could."
Kane paused and a demonic grin sprawled on his face as he added "If you take this and survive, I owe your life. This is the conditions I'm giving you. If you cross me, there is no chance to apologize. You along with everyone you know will be eviscerated in the most painful way possible. I don't give second chances."
Kane leaned forward and his grin widened as he finished "Make your choice, Chazz. Maintain your freedom or give me your life." Kane's golden eyes glowed casting a searing gaze at Chazz.
Chazz looked down at the syringe and muttered "For her, even if I had to die I would get revenge." before grabbing the syringe and injecting himself. Kane watched his every movement closely and analyzed the Extremis' transformation. He had experienced it first hand and knew the pain as he watched Chazz's body light up and glow orange.
Kane modified the Extremis to be stable and lose the drawbacks of potential combustion at any moment, but he found out from Venom that when they were evolving, Venom had already purged the Extremis of all it's drawbacks, making Kane a perfect Extremis.
Chazz groaned and grit his teeth, struggling not to cry out from the pain. Kane watched as the orange glow faded and Chazz took deep breaths, sweating profusely, the sweat only getting evaporated as it rolled down his face. His clothes burned up and he sat down, completely naked.
Kane stood above him and said "And?" Chazz looked up and his arms heated up before catching fire as he said "It doesn't hurt at all..." Kane threw him a set of clothes and said "You owe me your life, now go. Take care of the rest with Angel and Reiner."
Kane turned around and walked back to his lab adding "Remember my words Chazz. I'm ALWAYS watching." before disappearing into the lab, locking the door behind him. Chazz got dressed and looked at the lab door with grateful eyes, he could finally get revenge for his wife and it was all thanks to Kane.
Chazz got serious and walked out of the base, since Kane gave him such a gift, he would show him it wasn't a wrong decision.
Kane sat in his lab and looked at his Extremis altering set up. He started working on developing Extremis even further, Chazz was just the beginning. Based on the actions of Chazz and how he performed, never mind a small team, how strong would an army be? Never would he, or anyone around him, be in danger!
With that thought, he got to work. He worked through the night and didn't sleep a single second.
The next morning
Kane walked out of the lab and went to get a coffee, he glanced at the couch for a single moment before grabbing his coffee and going back to the lab, working for hours.
Deep into the night
Kane was having trouble keeping his eyes open but for some reason he just couldn't fall asleep. He groaned and stood up, leaving the lab and walking to the couch. He stood in front of the couch, staring at it silently before looking into a room and walking into it.
He came out with a blanket and turned the TV on before laying down on the couch, clutching to the blanket that was covering him, tightly before quickly falling asleep. Kane didn't know what was wrong with him, but it was the best sleep he had ever had. Even better than the first time he slept on it 2 nights ago.
The next morning Kane woke up
Kane sat up and wiped his mouth of the drool, Venom said "Nice." Kane said "Shut up." Venom chuckled and Megan said "Sleep well?" Kane nodded and looked at the blanket in his hands, Megan said "Maybe it's because of the her sm-" Kane interrupted her saying "Enough. What time is it?"
Megan said "3pm." Kane mumbled "So late?" Megan said "Well, you hadn't slept the night before, in addition to her sce- a 'more comfortable environment' your body took the chance to re-energize itself." Kane nodded and folded the blanket neatly before placing it on the cushion next to him.
Kane paused, startled by his own actions, and frowned. He really needed to get his personal affairs in order. Kane grabbed a coffee and sat back on the couch, watching the TV. He pulled the blanket onto his lap as he watched, whether it was a subconscious action or not was entirely of Kane's knowing.
Time passed and dusk rolled around
Angel and Reiner appeared and said "We have bad news." Kane was sitting on the couch and waved them over, Angel was about to sit on the couch, but Kane glared at him, and his Conqueror's haki burst out, pressuring the two and shaking the entire room.
Angel and Reiner found it a bit hard to breathe and Kane blinked before reeling his Haki back in and saying "What happened?" Angel and Reiner looked at each other and sat in the couches next to Kane before getting serious and saying "The spider guy is tough. 20 guys and us, no problem"
Kane frowned and said "Both of you?" Angel and Reiner nodded and Kane rubbed his temples saying "What's the results of the fight?" Reiner said "Me, Angel, and 10 of our guys managed to escape."
Kane closed his eyes and sipped on his coffee, Reiner added "Kane, this guy is tough. I'm not just saying that. He has sort of the same power as you... That Haki stuff." Kane opened one eye and Reiner continued "It felt like he could predict my movements before they happened. Me and Angel attacked him at the same time, nothing. The rest unloaded full magazines at him and he just dodged them all."
Kane said "Surely, you hit him once." Angel said "I think he might have a limit or something. While the staff was shooting at him, I also shot out feathers, a few managed to hit him and random unpredictable ricochets managed to hit as well."
Kane hummed "So unpredictable attacks work? What about pure speed?" Angel shook his head and said "Maybe I'm not fast enough but I couldn't touch him." Reiner spread his hands out and said "I'm not fast normally." Kane nodded and said "So the 20 from last time and the 10 from this time are all dead?"
Angel shook his head and said "No. They got stuck in webs and arrested." Kane frowned and said "Arrested?" Reiner nodded and said "I think he's a hero." Kane chuckled "A hero? Doesn't he know, there's no one to save?" Kane pointed to the TV and said "See for yourself. All these people do is complain about not being saved fast enough."
Kane shrugged and said "But that's none of my business. I'll take care of it, go help Chazz..." he paused before asking "How is Chazz, by the way." Angel whistled and said "I don't know what you gave him, but he's a machine now. Non-stop work and he has strange fire powers now or something.."
Reiner nodded and said "Almost as strong as us." Kane rubbed his chin and said "Do you want that too? It could evolve your mutant genes..." Angel and Reiner had wry smiles and shook their heads. Kane sighed "A pity. Come see me if you change your minds.. Oh, and remember to keep training with your abilities. There doesn't seem to be a limit to what they can accomplish."
Angel and Reiner nodded before leaving, Kane went back to watching TV, silently resting his hands on the blanket as he thought about how to handle the spider hero situation. Kane grinned, Venom was getting hungry... Maybe a 'fresh' meal wouldn't hurt.

When will Elizabeth return! Even I miss her! T-T Sweet little Kane seems to be going off the rails! What will happen next time!? I smell a special surprise in the near future~
