章 164: Chapter 164 - Trusted My Gut
My dad cornered me in my childhood room back back at the old house to get Celestes contact information so they could discuss our relationship. I was sketching in my art books when he barged in and would not leave until I gave it to him.
"Mom has it too why even ask me?" He gave me a long hard stare as he leaned on the doorframe. "I am not asking your mother I am asking you. Do you want me to outright deny this marriage? Or are you going be compliant and let me do what I need to do."
He has been strange since we got back from the airport. When we got off the plane together though his face was straight I could practically see the steam flowing off of him. He was angry. Very angry. It became worse after Celestes father had a brief word before leaving.
"I am not sure what to make of this to be very honest. I never anticipated in my generation this type of event occurring. I just hope you are ready for what comes next, because I am not even sure if I could protect my daughter let alone you."
The mood was foul after that.
I was thankful I left my car at the airport so despite still having to go back to the main house I could at least ride in peace. I watched as Celeste drove away with her parents and I felt bad that she had to be alone with them after that. I doubted they would be vicious but regardless that ride was not going to be pleasant.
When I got through the front doors at home the yelling started all over again. "How could you not tell me?!?!" My mother was the most incredulous about this. She is known for being able to smell intel on just about anyone and yet her son managed to hide such a juicy big piece of meat right under her nose.
I just sat there and let her process her emotions. I used to try and argue back but I have learned that letting her get it out was the best way for me to get in a word edge wise.
"I will just put this out there. I have been wanting to date her since I first knew what romantic love was. You could say she is my first and only love. Yes she is part of the reason I refused to settle down for a long time. We officially got together after Rachels wedding. No this is not something I will give up easily. "
After rattling off my answers I could tell by the way my Dads eyes bulged out of his head that I hit the nail on the head with what they wanted to ask me. The silence that ensued was heavy. After a while his eyes shifted from shock to being pensive. He was thinking hard and his hands flexed into fists before relaxing. My mother looked as though she had the wind knocked out of her.
I have often fought and argued with them. My youth was colored with memories of me doing something they did not like and their attempts to curb that rebellious streak. But this was a challenge not easily argued.
Love was not illegal.
My father ended up just walking away and not speaking to me until before dinner when we blocked me into my room. I was not sure why he wanted to meet Celeste but I could guess that he wanted to either convince her as he could not convince me or, and this was less likely, he was hazing her. Put her through a trial to see if this was something worth taking a risk.
As he was about to head out I grabbed his shoulder. "Take it easy on her ok?" He did not turn around to face me but his posture stiffened slightly. He was listening. "Please. I am asking as your son to give her a fair chance."
He simply nodded and went to shrug me off. "Wait you should see this too. Here. This is a copy by the way but I got the old man to sign off on letting me marry who I want. If that helps your decision in any way."
He took the contract but because he kept his back to me I could not see what his reaction was. His body language also gave no other clues. "Go eat with your mother we can continue this later."
He took the copy and left to his office. I could tell my words sunk under his skin. All I could hope that this changed whatever course he had planned his battleship to go.
As much as I wanted to go back to work, the media frenzy surrounding whether this was true of not meant the house was swarmed with cameras and reporters. The articles published online was very polar regarding how people felt about my relationship.
Some felt they were witnessing a royalty level event, that THE wealthiest people in the country were possibly joining hands. There were financial reports being released projecting what the economy could look like if ownership of previously separate entities were combined. Others who have heard of my previous behavior were commenting on just what I did to crack the ice queen.
Among our peers the conversations were more explosive. It was not uncommon for wealthy families to only marry within wealth as they wanted to expand their net worth and assets. But out wealth was on a different level. This would take whatever careful balance we had and make the wealth gap so large no family could every possibly catch up.
It also sparked discussion on if we have children. They would be the most valuable ticket for an instant boost into getting a hand in wealth that not even in ones lifetime they could receive. As it was marriage with just one of us alone was life changing. Now there would be no other option.
I was calm however. Regardless of what happens if push comes to shove I will protect both my and Celestes happiness. So the words of faceless people meant nothing. I trusted my gut and my gut was telling me that this will work out.
