章 4: Not Alone
Oh shit! How did this happen. I was sure I was just spearing fish. I was doing terrible how did I come to attract an observer. Worst of all it snuck up on me. When I finally turned around hearing a small sound it freaked me out so much I jumped back into the water and now I'm all wet and hurting.
It come toward me. It's a cat. now normally I like cats, even ones like this one I mean it's a beautiful, suave this one. It's jut too bad it's a predator and the only reason I can think of that it approached me is I'm in it's territory or it's hungry and I'm dinner. None of those sound good to me.
It begins to approach me. I back up, just sliding back on my butt further into the water. It stops then continues to approach me. I take a closer look it's a black cat so I'm not sure what kind it is. I can at least tell it's a panther but those include a lot of big cats. Only jaguars and leopards are considered true panthers and it sure looks like a black panther so It's probably one of the two. My random cat knowledge that leopards can run at car speeds reminds me to give up on running not that I can run well anyway. Both swim just fine and I doubt the water will really discourage it enough to save me. They both climb, though one likes to more than the other so won't help.
It's like it knows that it has me cornered as it takes it's time to approach me. A languid pace that is almost hypnotizing despite the impending doom it represents. having too much knowledge about predator I give up any chance of escaping. Once it is at the water's edge I close my eyes.
I hear it approach. The splashing of the panther's walk into the water as I feel the ripples of the water against me. The slash and feeling of the water getting closer together till I feel It's whiskers against my face. I feel the intake of breath though I hold my mine. It smells my neck and puts a paw on my shoulder.
It stops, no nibbles no claws and most important I'm still alive. I open my eyes and the panther looks at me like it knows so much and wants to know more. It's as if I'm the one who holds the answers. I pull my hand from behind my back to face palm up and offer my hand to the panther. I t sniffs my hand then just rests it's head on my hand.
It seems so unreal. I start to pet it and it leans in to my hand. I have always wanted a big cat like this as a pet so this is like a dream come true so much so I put all the fear behind me and just enjoy this.
I begin to get cold but I don't want this to end. A strong breeze blows through and causes me to shiver. The panther gets it's paw off my shoulder and grabs my collar at the nape of my neck and starts pulling me out of the water. It mostly feels as if my shirt is being pulled over my head. Once I'm moving the panther lets go.
I walk out of the water and start trying to squeeze the water out of my shirt. I then realize that my pants being wet would affect my shirt since it reaches my thighs, so once my shirt isn't dripping wet I take off my pants to wring them out. I lay them down on the rock I sunned myself on earlier then finish wringing out my shirt while it's still on me. Only then do I put my pants back on.
I turn and find that the panther is still here. It's facing the other way sitting down licking itself. As I look I notice it does have those weird spots that jaguars have. It must be a jaguar. I walk over and put my hand on it's back. It looks up at me and goes back to licking all it's wet fur.
Deciding not to bother it further I find my spear and go back to try to spear fish. I continue to fail. once I notice that the sun has stated to set I give up. At least my jaguar is still here and seems done cleaning itself. It's actually dry now compared to me as I am not. I sit down facing it, as I do so my stomach growls. I hold my stomach and pout. I look at the jaguar and it is staring at me.
'What you can't honestly expect me to be any good at this. I lived a life of comfort before' I complain to the jaguar. To my surprise the jaguar tilts it's head like it is expressing itself.
'Hey nod your head if you understand me' I tell it and this time it just stands up and walks past me. I was beginning to think the world was a dream again but again I find reasons it could be either.
My contemplations are interrupted by splashing sounds. I look over as the jaguar is swiping at the water and a fish lands on the ground to his side. He; yes I did just notice it is a he; who has caught the fish, already has quite a few.
He looks over at me and grabs one of the fish and brings it over to me. I've heard of cats bringing catches to their owners. This is so much better than a mouse.
I grab it as best I can and take it to the cave and go about lighting a fire. It takes me a few tries but eventually I manage to light the fire. Once I get the fire really going I get one of the green stick that wont just burn and stab one end into the fish and prop it up to cook it.
The jaguar nudges me and nudges a pile of fish to me. I take them and do the same to them as I did the first one. Once they are cooked I eat what I can not forgetting to some to jaguar so he can eat too. I end up eating three and a half of the fishes the rest of 9 fish go to the jaguar.
I'm dry now but still cold so once he is done eating I go over to him and slowly go to cuddle him. Since he let me, I cuddle in close to go to sleep; glad I'm not alone this cold night.
