"Let's get you inside and warm up." Christopher guided Rose into the conservatory. It was well-lit with gas lights. The glass-walled room was warm and cozy. Rose surveyed the area and noticed someone was keeping up with what she had started. She wondered who was caring for the plants. Her thought was disrupted by Christopher speaking to her.
"Rose, this is just my observation, but you should dress warmly when you go outside. This is the second time I have caught you wearing only a thin nightgown in my conservatory. By the way, is that all you own is delicate nighties? Not that I'm complaining. You look beautiful in them."
Christopher wiggled his eyebrows at Rose and growled.
Rose chuckled at his attempt to flirt with her. Then she felt shame for Christopher seeing her this way. Rose suddenly became self-conscious about the gown being see-through. She crossed her arms over her upper body and blushed bright red in embarrassment. Rose didn't want Christopher to think she was without modesty.
"Doesn't Dante have enough money to get you some lovely winter dresses? Or does he only let you dress up when company comes over?" Christopher clicked his tongue.
"That man. He should really take better care of his girl. Shame on the Count. If you were my lady, I would dress in the finest things that money could buy." Lord Thorn had a smug attitude when he spoke the words. Rose knew it was a poke at Dante.
"I'll have to mention it to him the next time we speak," Rose said with an impassive and sarcastic expression.
This made Christopher howl with laughter, and Rose laughed loudly with him. The Lord noticed Rose was heavily blushing and attempting to cover herself. He thought it best to get her a robe and blanket before his carnal urges took over, and he had his way with her on the conservatory floor. His mind continued to wander in sinful directions.
"I need an ice bath." He mumbled to himself, where he thought Rose couldn't hear.
"What was that? Sorry, I missed what you said." Rose asked The Lord with sincerity.
"I said stay in here, love. Would you like me to fetch you some hot tea? I'll return in a few minutes." Christopher was relieved she had not heard him. He was about to leave the conservatory for the kitchen when Rose asked.
"Do you have hot chocolate? It's better than tea."
"I'm not sure if we do, but Duncan might know. He's the butler here at the mansion." Christopher smoothed Rose's wind-blown hair back from her face. "Give me a moment, okay?" Rose nodded at The Lord.
Stepping out of the greenhouse into the corridor, he leaned his head against the cool brick wall. Christopher had to take a minute and adjust his manhood. His member was more rigid than a steel column. He thought bringing Rose here was not a smart idea. He should have listened to Jackson and gotten his emotions under better control.
"I don't know how long I can wait." He muttered, shaking his head.
Christopher returned a few minutes later after collecting his senses with a robe and blankets. "Have a seat here." Lord Thorn pulled out a chair from the table, and Rose sat down.
"I just spoke with our cook, and we have hot chocolate. It will be served momentarily." Christopher was busy putting the robe around Rose's shoulders.
It was a pastel peach with cream-colored flowers embroidered around the yoke. He then covered her lap in a quilted blanket. A knock came from the entrance of the conservatory. The maid entered, set a tray on the table, poured a cup of hot chocolate, and passed it to Rose. She blew on the hot drink, steam drifted from the cup, and The Lord watched her take a cautious sip.
"How is your drink?" Christopher inquired.
"Scrumptious and warm," Rose responded. Her hands felt good wrapped around the heat of the cup.
"Excellent; how about the robe and blankets? Are they enough? If not, I can get you another one."
Rose thought Christopher was concerned about her well-being. She didn't know he was trying to cover her body before he ended up making her a wanton mess in his arms. He turned to the maid that was waiting for any last-minute instructions.
"Thank you, Lucy, that will be all for tonight," the young servant girl quickly left.
"I feel much better now. The chill is gone. Thank you for being so thoughtful." Rose patted and rubbed Christopher on the back of his large hand in gratitude.
Christopher was thankful Rose's body was covered, and he relaxed again. He was also glad to have her out of the chilly night air and away from Dante for the evening. The Lord watched Rose lick her lips. She was sipping her hot chocolate and nibbling on a lemon cookie he had ordered for her from the kitchen. Christopher sat back in his chair and scrubbed his face in repose.
It had been an eventful night so far. Lord Thorn discerned Rose was aloof; through his brief interactions with her, she seemed socially immature. He already knew she was shy and quiet. She was not an ordinary woman. He pondered what had happened in Rose's life that made her this way.
"Did you get enough to eat and drink?" Christopher asked Rose.
He saw she had finished her cookie and hot chocolate. She nodded; she was done. He tried to make Rose feel at ease so she would open up and talk with him.
"That's great. How about we sit over there? That way, you can snuggle up while I keep you warm." Lord Thorn was about to help Rose out of the wicker chair and stroll with her to the loveseat when he watched her bite and suck her luscious lower lip.
It was more than Christopher's wits could handle; he took his thumb and pulled Rose's lip down from between her teeth.
"Stop doing that in front of me!" he snapped.
"Doing what?" Rose quipped.
"Gnawing and sucking on your bottom lip! If you continue doing that, I won't be responsible for what comes next!" Said Christopher as his figure loomed over her in the chair.
Rose took note as The Lord placed his hands on each arm of the chair, caging her where she sat.
"I can barely hold myself together, and you're not helping. Are you listening to me, Rose? Do you understand what I'm getting at?" Lord Thorn tersely spat at her, raising his eyebrows in question. He had leaned in so close she could feel the heat from his breath as he exhaled.
Rose realized why Christopher was acting frustrated after a moment.
"OH...!" Rose's eyes popped wide at what Christopher was referring to.
"Sorry," she apologized quickly. "It's an unconscious behavior. I didn't know it made you feel that way. I will keep that in mind when we're together." She said with reassurance.
"Well, keep it in mind because if I see you do that again, I won't be capable of stopping myself from taking you to my bed chambers and doing obscenely lewd things to your body."
The Lord narrowed his eyes and glared sharply into Rose's face. His lips wore an unscrupulous grin. She was still trapped in the chair by his massive arms. Rose watched as Christopher's grip tightened, and the wicker creaked under the strain. She tried to lean back farther to escape his heated gaze.
Rose could tell The Lord was dead serious about bedding her.
Christopher saw Rose's expression fall and examined the erratic pulse pounding in her neck; she was frightened by his overbearing outburst. He stood and backed away from her. The Lord closed his eyes and sighed, pushing his hands through his thick mane.
"I'm sorry, love. I don't know what possessed me to say that to you. Are you okay?" Rose nodded silently at his question and tried to avoid eye contact with him.
"Come here, sweetheart," Christopher offered Rose his hand. "Let's sit over here, and I will keep you warm while we chat." The two sat on the loveseat, and The Lord drew Rose closer to his side so she could lean on him while they chatted; he engulfed her with his muscular arm. "Comfy?" Christopher inquired of Rose.
"Yes, that is much better," Rose said, turning her neck around to see The Lord's face. She wasn't sure it was safe to be so close to the man who threatened to do indecent things to her.
