QUENTIN WATCHED CANDI'S FACE, how her eyes widened and her jaw went slack. Her brows slowly rose, only to pull down into a furrowed line as her mind caught up to what he was saying.

He'd missed this. She was so expressive. It was a wonder she was so good at poker, given how open her face was. He almost always knew what she was thinking at a glance. Or at least how she was feeling. He'd always envied her that freedom. Growing up as the only Asian kid in his school, he'd had to develop a tough skin at an early age. Now, his hard outer shell was a permanent fixture. Honestly, it felt as though that shell was all that was holding him together right now.

Candi crossed her arms under her breasts and scowled at him. "Did you drag me out here on purpose so I couldn't make a scene?"

Even if it was the worst reaction, he still chuckled. "No. It only occurred to me as we got here."
