Elisabeth was amused by his questions. 'Tour with Allan. She's a fantastic costumier; she makes some of their stuff now.'

'So they've been together for a while?'

She almost smiled. 'Twelve years.'

'Married? Kids?'

'They don't want any. And they couldn't be more married than they already are.'

He was quiet for a while. When next he spoke it was to say, 'I'm a traditionalist. I want the ring on my finger and the ball games in the back yard.'

In the open air office car park they sat while Robert asked, 'Why didn't you talk to him about what you have in mind?'

'What do I have in mind?'

Robert fiddled with the keys. 'Going all out for a not guilty.'

'If that's what I had in mind I would have discussed it with him.'

'But I thought ...'

She cut him off. 'Forgive me for thinking aloud.'

It had not been speculation. 'What changed your mind?'

Elisabeth reacted sharply. 'Nothing changed it because I hadn't made it up.'

Touchy! He backed off. 'So what then?'
