….
I extended a hand to help her up. She hesitated for a moment before taking it, her grip soft yet warm.
"Thank you very much," she said, her voice gentle and sincere.
"It's no problem," I replied with a small smile.
"I'm Asia Argento," she introduced herself, bowing slightly.
"I'm Shiro. Nice to meet you," I said in return.
As I looked at her, I realized who she was—and what awaited her if she reached the church. I felt a pang of guilt knowing I was about to lie, but if it meant sparing her from what I knew was coming, it was worth it.
"You're from the church, right?" I asked cautiously.
Her expression faltered, sadness flickering in her eyes. "Well, no… not exactly. I've been thrown out of the church I was staying at. I'm heading to a new one now."
I leaned in slightly and whispered, my tone serious. "Asia, I know this might be hard to believe, but the church you're going to—it's a trap. The fallen angels are planning to use you. I know we just met, but you have to trust me. I overheard everything when I passed by the church."
Her eyes widened, confusion and fear mingling in her expression. "A trap…? But why would they—"
"They want your Sacred Gear," I interrupted gently. "It's too valuable. Please, Asia, don't go to them."
She hesitated, uncertainty written all over her face. "But…?"
I placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Stay with me for now. I'll explain everything and keep you safe."
I smiled at her kindly, fully reassuring her.
Asia's eyes widened like dinner plates, the shock clear on her face. "A-Are you s-sure?" she stammered.
"Yes," I said firmly.
Her voice trembled with hesitation. "I'm sorry that I have to ask, but… are you a devil?"
I shook my head. "No, I'm not a devil. If you want proof, let me hold your cross necklace. If I were a devil, it would burn me, right?"
She hesitated but eventually took off her necklace and handed it to me. I held it in my hand without issue.
"See? Nothing," I said, showing her my unscorched palm. "I'm not lying to you."
Asia looked at the necklace in my hand, her eyes widening even further. "The color… it changed!"
I glanced at the necklace, noticing its color had shifted to blue.
"This necklace changes color to reveal lies," she explained, her voice trembling. "Blue means the person is telling the truth. Red means they're lying. I… I can't believe it. I can't believe they would do this to me."
Her voice cracked, and tears began to stream down her face. Without thinking, I pulled her into a comforting hug.
….
After Asia had calmed down and stopped crying, I handed her necklace back. As we made our way to my house, a thought nagged at the back of my mind.
Koneko's going to kill me.
We arrived at my home to find Koneko lounging on the couch. Her sharp gaze shifted to us as we entered. She looked at Asia, then at me. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she took in my nervous expression.
"Shiro," Koneko said flatly, "explain who this is."
"How about we let her explain instead?" I suggested, hoping to deflect some of the tension.
Asia stepped forward, her voice soft but steady. "Hi, I'm Asia Argento. Shiro saved me from being sent into the hands of fallen angels."
Koneko's expression didn't waver. "You're from the Church."
Asia nodded, her tone tinged with sadness. "I was thrown out of the Church because I healed a devil."
"Oh, before I forget," I interjected, "Asia, Koneko here is my girlfriend."
"And a devil," Koneko added bluntly.
Asia's eyes widened at the revelation. "You're a devil?"
"Asia, are you okay?" I asked, noticing her startled expression.
Asia smiled faintly, her green eyes softening. "I'm fine. You seem like a good person, Koneko."
"She really is," I said with a warm smile. "I love her very much."
Koneko's cheeks turned a faint shade of pink, and she looked away slightly.
I continued, "You see, I was walking by an old, run-down church when I overheard a group of fallen angels talking about their plan to take Twilight Healing from Asia. Taking someone's Sacred Gear would kill them. I couldn't let that happen, so I brought her here."
Koneko nodded thoughtfully. "Okay. I'll inform Rias about what you saw. Oh, by the way, your candy stash is on the table."
"Wait, what?" I blinked, momentarily distracted.
Asia tilted her head curiously. "Who is Rias?"
"Rias is Koneko's boss," I explained. "Anything supernatural that happens in this town falls under her jurisdiction. Even angels have to get her permission to walk around here. She's very kind but can be a bit commanding at times. Still, she has a good heart."
"I understand," Asia said softly, nodding. "Um… so where do I stay?"
I hesitated for a moment, glancing at Koneko, who raised an eyebrow. This was going to be tricky.
….
After showing Asia to her room, I returned to mine and put on some music to relax. The familiar rhythm filled the air, helping me focus as I entered my Instant Dungeon.
The dark, ominous vampire castle was still there in the distance, but my attention shifted to something more pressing—the skill books I hadn't yet used.
I opened my inventory and took a closer look at their titles:
• Icicle Lance
• Chain Lightning
• Metal Control
• Holy Break
• Hell Flare
• Mist of Death
• Water Slicers
• Dragon Lightning
A prompt appeared in front of me.
Would you like to learn these skills?
