The portal's swirling vortex of light and shadow enveloped Kael, and the world shifted around him. He felt weightless, as though he were floating in a void, but the sensation was fleeting. A moment later, solid ground appeared beneath his feet, and the disorienting swirl of the portal faded.
Kael blinked, adjusting to his surroundings. The air here was cool and tinged with a faint metallic scent. Above him stretched a sky of perpetual twilight, its hues a blend of deep orange and dark purple. The horizon was dotted with floating islands, their jagged silhouettes casting long shadows across a sprawling landscape of dense forests and crumbling ruins.
"This is… different," Kael muttered, his voice echoing faintly.
Zen stepped through the portal behind him, his robes undisturbed by the journey. "Welcome to the Realm of Endless Twilight," he said, his tone as calm as ever. "The first of the fractured realms."
Kael scanned the environment, taking in the eerie beauty of the realm. "Why is it called that?"
"Because here, time stands still," Zen explained. "The sun never rises, and the night never falls. The realm exists in a constant state of twilight, a reflection of its fractured nature."
Kael took a tentative step forward, the ground beneath him crunching softly. It was covered in a strange, crystalline substance that glimmered faintly in the twilight. "So, what now? What are we supposed to find here?"
Zen's gaze drifted to the largest of the floating islands in the distance. "Each fractured realm holds a fragment of the truth, hidden within its depths. To advance, we must uncover the realm's secret and prove ourselves worthy to move forward."
Kael frowned. "And what kind of test are we talking about?"
Zen's lips pressed into a thin line. "The nature of the test varies from realm to realm. But beware—this place is not empty. Creatures born of the realm's instability will seek to stop us. They are drawn to your energy, Kael."
Kael felt the weight of Zen's words settle over him, but he pushed down the fear. "Let's get moving, then."
---
The forest was dense, its towering trees covered in twisting vines that seemed to pulse faintly with life. As Kael and Zen moved deeper, the eerie quiet of the realm began to weigh on them. The only sounds were their footsteps and the occasional rustle of leaves.
Kael's grip tightened on his dagger. "This place feels… wrong."
Zen nodded. "The instability of the fractured realms affects everything here. The creatures, the land, even the air itself. Stay alert."
As they continued, Kael noticed strange carvings on the trees—symbols he couldn't decipher but felt oddly familiar. He reached out to touch one, but Zen stopped him with a sharp gesture.
"Do not touch them," Zen warned. "Those markings are wards, remnants of the realm's original guardians. They may not take kindly to intruders."
Kael pulled his hand back, uneasy. "Guardians? Are they still around?"
"Possibly," Zen said, his eyes scanning the forest. "If they are, we must tread carefully."
Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the trees. Kael froze, his heart racing as the sound grew closer.
Zen stepped in front of him, his staff at the ready. "They've found us."
From the shadows emerged a creature unlike anything Kael had seen. Its body was humanoid but twisted and grotesque, covered in jagged crystal shards that glowed faintly. Its eyes burned with a pale, otherworldly light, and its movements were jerky and unnatural.
"What is that?" Kael whispered.
"A Crystal Wraith," Zen said grimly. "A manifestation of the realm's corruption. Be ready."
The wraith let out a piercing shriek and charged. Kael instinctively called upon his power, the light and shadow within him flaring to life. He raised his hand, releasing a burst of energy that struck the creature square in the chest.
The wraith staggered but didn't fall. It lunged at Kael with crystal-tipped claws, and he barely dodged in time. Zen stepped forward, his staff glowing with blue energy as he struck the creature, sending it crashing into a tree.
"They're resilient," Zen said, his tone calm but urgent. "Do not let up."
Kael nodded, focusing his energy. This time, he tried to blend the light and shadow more deliberately, forming a swirling orb in his palm. When the wraith charged again, he hurled the orb, the combined forces of light and darkness detonating on impact.
The wraith let out a final, ear-splitting shriek before disintegrating into shards of crystal that dissolved into the ground.
Kael panted, his hands trembling. "That was tougher than the Shade Stalker."
Zen gave a small nod. "Each realm's creatures are stronger and more attuned to the instability. You will face far worse before this journey is over."
Kael wiped the sweat from his brow, forcing himself to calm down. "What now?"
Zen pointed deeper into the forest. "The heart of the realm lies ahead. If we're to uncover its secret, we must reach it before the realm's corruption overwhelms us."
Kael glanced at the floating islands in the distance, their jagged forms casting ominous shadows over the forest. He took a deep breath and steadied his resolve.
"Let's keep moving."
