章 6: Six: Fall

LoriHaden — as the straws had determined — was the first to attack. Once again she gave it her all, striking at the Unformed Ethos' weak spots. She evaded, defended and attacked. Yet, after giving it her all, she fell short once again.

This time it was CalisVon's turn.

Looking at him, Mor wondered what the boy's weapon of choice would be, how he would fight and if he would succeed.

Hesitating for a moment, CalisVon drew closer, then TayDrigin had asked him.

"What weapon would you like?" TayDrigin had asked, waiting to produce one from her Inventory.

"Duel blades." CalisVon had said, his voice almost shaky.

'Cool choice.' Mor had thought.

Producing the weapon from her Inventory, she gave it to Calis, who took them and inspected them for a second too long. He was stalling.

Finally turning his sights to the Unformed Ethos, Calis took a step forward and Mor found himself leaning in. He was eager to see what CalisVon could do.

This time the Unformed Ethos they were facing looked like a honey bagger. Except it was as tall as a fully grown man, and it had claws as long as swords.

Once CalisVon had gotten into the Unformed Ethos' view, it dashed toward him in a frenzy. Mor saw Calis freeze up, and at the corner of his eye, he could sense his mother tense up. She was preparing herself to jump into the foray.

But just as the Unformed got within an inch of him, Calis sidestepped the creature and took a swing at its heels with both swords. Dealing double the damage. Once more, he had struck at its joints were the blackness was shimmering. And he had done this with an efficiency and prowess that did not scream timid or afraid.

Seeing this, Mor's jaws fell. And he could tell he wasn't the only one.

Following Calis' strike, the Unformed found itself reeling onto the ground crashing into a tree. Calis — like the others — did not give the Unformed time to recover. He dashed forward, a struck in a spin with both swords.

He struck at the Unformed Ethos' wrist — its joints — and had successfully taken it off.

Upon witnessing this, Mor found tension rise within everyone around him. Himself included.

Suddenly enraged, the Unformed lashed out with its one good hand. It took a swing at Calis with such a speed he was not able tot dodge in time. Instead, he used his swords to redirect the bulk of the Unformed Ethos' strike.

Still taking much of the impact, Calis was throw back. But he didn't fall, instead he landed on his feet.

The Unformed Ethos likewise capitalized on this distraction and pounced. It lashed out with its one good hand filled with claws, then it bite down and returned with its claws.

Each time Calis deflected the attack, but he was being pushed back. He was even getting into a corner, and if that were to happen, he would have lost.

'Come on.' Mor said, as he found himself cheering Calis on.

As though he heard this, Calis deflected an attack. And instead of being pushed back, he dug his heels into the ground, then he struck out with both his swords. Dealing great damage to the Unformed Ethos' one good hand.

He struck at the joint so it crumbled and the Unformed Ethos' hand dangled from its arm.

"Yes!" Cheers rose into the air, and Mor likewise was holding in a fist in anticipation.

Calis ducked under the Unformed Ethos, sliding between its legs. As he slid, he sent both blades into the Unformed Ethos' feet. He didn't do enough damage to take them out, but he did unbalance the Unformed so it began to wobble.

Digging this feet into the ground, he was torqued onto his feet. And without taking a breather, he dashed forward, aiming for the Unformed Ethos' feet once again in an attempt to crippled it.

But once he got close enough, the Unformed sent its tail racing for Calis.

'Dammit!' Mor thought, and just then, to his surprise, Calis had leaped over the tail attack. Then rolled toward its feet and gave it a good slash at its joints.

"Yes!"

"Incredible!"

Cheers once again flew into the air as they saw the Unformed Ethos fall onto its back. CalisVon then struck at its wrist, so its hand went flying off. Now defenseless, the Unformed tried turn over and lie on its belly so as to avoid its weak spot.

Unfortunately for it, Calis was too fast. Running up the Unformed Ethos' leg, CalisVon made his way up to its chest, then with all his might, he struck at the spot in its chest that looked like a crack. The same spot MayHaden had attacked to claim her victory.

Once he struck at it, the rocks covering its chest broke open ans poured away. This attack had momentarily paralyzed the Unformed Ethos, so that now a shimmering blackness was revealed.

One strike and it would be over.

"Hell yeah!" Mor found himself screaming, drawing all attention to him. He shrivled under their gaze and began to scratch his neck. Turning his sights back to Calis, MorDrigin felt uneasy by what he saw.

Calis had both hands with his swords raised, ready to impale the shimmering blackness and claim his prize.

But he did not strike, instead he froze.

"What?" TayDrigin found herself saying.

"What is he doing?" MayHaden wondered.

"Come on, take the hit." LoriHaden said with annoyance in her tone.

"Why isn't he attacking?" SaiDrigin had asked, Mor who was likewise frozen.

CalisVon wasn't attacking, he was quivering, frightened even.

'Come on, finish it.' Mor thought as his gaze was frozen on Calis.

He kept on quivering, while also frozen in place. Then, the Unformed recovered from its temporary paralysis and slammed Calis off its body with its wrist.

Crashing into the floor, Calis had dropped his weapons, as he barely sat up while panting hard.

"Mom." SaiDrigin had called out, expecting TayDrigin to go in and save him, but she just stood and watched.

The Unformed Ethos sat up. Once it did so, the rocks CalisVon had broken off its chest ran back into place, so it looked like time was going in reverse. The same thing happened for its hands, then its feet.

It stood, then turned its sights to CalisVon, who was still frozen and heaving.

"CalisVon get up!" LoriHaden screamed.

"Go for your weapon!" MayHaden screamed.

"Mom!" Sai called out, she even pulled on her mother but she was in a daze, watching CalisVon with an intensity.

Mor on the other hand said nothing. As he watched Calis, he knew at once what had happened to him and he felt his heart lurch. He was doubting himself, he was feeling like an impostor and he was afraid he would disappoint his family.

Why was this boy so similar to Mor?
