"Ace (Kaito), cover the left flank!" Shadow's (Mika) voice cut through the chaos, firm and unyielding.
Kaito, now fully embracing his nickname, nodded, adjusting the cannon in his grip. The weapon hummed faintly, its charge nearing depletion. He moved into position, scanning the battlefield with focused intensity.
"Techie (Haruto), how much longer on that drone override?" Shadow called, firing precise bursts to keep the swarm at bay.
Techie crouched behind a makeshift barricade, his hands flying over the controls of a salvaged drone terminal. "Almost there!" he shouted, his usual calm replaced with tension.
"Make it fast!" Captain (Reika) ordered, slicing through an attacking creature with her blade. Her movements were swift and deadly, but there was no mistaking the strain in her voice. "We can't hold them off forever!"
The team moved with increasing cohesion, their codenames turning into an instinctive shorthand for survival. Ace aimed his cannon at a dense cluster of monsters, taking a deep breath before firing. The beam tore through the swarm, leaving charred remains in its wake.
"Cluster down!" Ace called out, shifting his stance to guard Techie.
"Nice shot!" Shadow replied, reloading her rifle with practiced precision. "Keep it up, everyone!"
"Don't get cocky yet," Captain warned, slicing through another leaping creature. She glanced over her shoulder at Techie. "Status?"
"Got it!" Techie exclaimed as the drone terminal sparked. "The reinforcement drones are down—at least for now!"
"Good work!" Shadow shouted, her voice carrying a note of relief. "Now let's finish this swarm."
The team pressed forward, their combined efforts driving back the remaining monsters. With Techie's technical prowess, Shadow's unyielding determination, Captain's tactical precision, and Ace's firepower, they turned the tide of the battle.
When the final creature fell, silence blanketed the battlefield, save for their labored breathing.
"Is it over?" Techie asked, his voice small in the eerie stillness.
Captain wiped blood and sweat from her face, her grip on her blade tightening. "I don't like this. It's too quiet."
Shadow scanned the area, her rifle at the ready. "Stay sharp. If there's more, it's not going to be small."
A low rumble vibrated through the ground.
"Uh… anyone else feel that?" Techie asked, his eyes wide.
The tremors grew stronger, cracks snaking through the ground beneath their feet. From the far end of the arena, a shadow began to rise—an impossibly massive figure blotting out the light.
Ace's heart pounded as the creature emerged, towering over the battlefield. Its glowing red eyes seared into the air like molten embers, and its roar was a deafening wall of sound that shook their very bones.
Captain took a step back, her voice barely a whisper. "That thing's… huge."
"It's not just huge. It's a monster," Techie said, his voice trembling as he stumbled back a step.
The creature let out another roar, shaking the ground violently as it advanced. Its massive claw, each talon the size of a car, scraped against the ground.
"What's the plan, Captain?" Ace asked, his voice wavering as he tightened his grip on the cannon.
Captain's jaw clenched. She took a deep breath, her tone unwavering despite the dread in her eyes. "We survive. That's the plan."
The monster lunged forward, its massive claw slamming down toward the team.
