章 21: Mission Reward
"You guys really got trapped for days? What did you do, just sit there and hope someone would find you?" Ian asked, looking at the four soldiers they had saved from the Devil's Nest.
The soldiers, still shaken up from everything, shifted uncomfortably. One of them, a young guy with wide eyes, spoke up. "We... we tried everything. We fought back, but they just kept coming. The werewolves were everywhere. We couldn't even think straight after the first day."
Ian raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like you guys just gave up. Thought you could survive on luck alone?"
"No, it wasn't like that," another soldier, a woman with a tough look, interrupted. "We fought as long as we could. But they were too strong. We ran out of options."
Ian snorted. "Right. Running out of options doesn't sound like a good excuse. You should've been smarter."
Barseagle shot Ian a look, but didn't say anything. The other soldiers kept their heads down, clearly not wanting to anger Ian any further.
"Well, at least you're alive," Barseagle said, trying to ease the tension. "That's what matters right now."
Ian grinned. "Yeah, if you can call that surviving."
They finally arrived at the army camp. The scene was monotonous with the usual noise of soldiers rushing around, getting things done. The saved soldiers were quickly escorted to the medical tents, while Team 7 made their way toward the debriefing area.
Inside, they were met by a tall officer, his face set in an arrogant frown. "You're back early," he said, not even acknowledging the four soldiers. "That's a surprise."
Ian rolled his eyes. "What? Did you think we were gonna take our sweet time getting here? You really have no idea how things work, huh?"
The officer raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me?"
"I mean, you're here acting like you did something special. We're the ones who pulled those idiots out of the mess they got themselves into. Maybe you should thank us instead of questioning us," Ian said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
The officer glared at Ian, but his expression didn't change much. "You're here for your reward, not to talk back. Be grateful you're getting anything at all."
"Grateful?" Ian scoffed. "I didn't sign up to be part of your circus just to be some dog you throw scraps at. You want to show some respect? Start by acting like you know what you're talking about."
"Enough," Barseagle interjected, stepping in between Ian and the officer. "We're here for our reward. Let's just get it over with."
The officer looked back at Ian, clearly annoyed. "Fine. You want your reward, here it is." He tossed a small bag on the table in front of them. "Take it or leave it."
Ian grabbed the bag without a second thought, eyeing the officer one last time. "Next time, try showing a little more respect. Maybe you'll actually get something useful done."
The officer clenched his jaw but didn't say anything. "Whatever. Just get out of my sight."
As Team 7 turned to leave, Daniel whispered, "You just can't help yourself, can you?"
Ian smirked, "Someone has to put them in their place. Someone with brains, that is."
Kate laughed. "You sure have a way with words."
"Yeah, well, they need it," Ian said with a shrug. "Otherwise they'd all just keep thinking they're important."
Liz rolled her eyes. "You really like making enemies, don't you?"
"I don't make 'em. I just tell the truth, and they can't handle it," Ian replied, grinning as they walked out of the room.
