章 119: The Birth of an Idea

After the disappointing results of the weapons exhibition, Gustav Krupp turned to Oscar. "By the way, Your Royal Highness, Count Tirpitz asked me to inform you that he has returned to the Admiralty. Regarding the Navy's potential purchase of our weapons, he suggests you meet with him there."

Oscar nodded thoughtfully. The focus of the exhibition had been on the Army, given its central role in large-scale procurement. The Navy's needs for small arms were comparatively limited. Even a complete refit of their forces wouldn't generate substantial orders. However, with the Army's lukewarm reception, Oscar knew he had to consider alternative strategies. "Perhaps the Navy holds the key to our breakthrough," he mused silently.

His thoughts shifted toward a bolder idea. "It's time to establish a Marine Corps," he thought. "A force loyal to me, armed entirely with equipment from the German Arms Company. This would increase orders and create a unit with unmatched combat capability."

The idea was more than practical—it was political. The Army's resistance had exposed a harsh reality: Oscar's influence within the military wasn't as secure as he had hoped. Building a new force aligned entirely with his vision could tip the balance of power in his favor.

Oscar spoke with quiet resolve. "Mr. Krupp, I leave the management of the German Arms Company in your hands for now. I'll visit the Admiralty and explore further opportunities to expand our influence."

"Yes, Your Royal Highness," Krupp replied, though he could not help but feel a sting of frustration. For all their technical brilliance, the exhibition had yielded little fruit. Their weapons had been overshadowed by the powerful influence of Mauser and Rheinmetall, whose political maneuvering had stalled the company's progress. As Oscar departed, Krupp clenched his fists. "Mauser, Rheinmetall—you won't block us forever. I will remember this," he muttered darkly.

At the Admiralty, Marshal Count Tirpitz was waiting for Oscar in his office. Upon seeing him, Tirpitz greeted the Crown Prince warmly. "Your Highness, welcome. The German Arms Company has truly outdone itself. The weapons on display were extraordinary."

Oscar gave a tired smile. "Thank you, Marshal. Unfortunately, the Army doesn't seem to share that view. The orders we've received are painfully small. I can't understand their reluctance to embrace progress."

"Your Highness, don't be discouraged. The quality of your weapons speaks for itself, and in time, they'll recognize their value. When war breaks out, the demand for advanced equipment will leave them no choice."

Oscar's expression hardened. "I understand your point, Marshal, but I refuse to wait for war to force change. These weapons could give us an overwhelming advantage, sparing countless lives. Every soldier's life is precious, and we must prepare now to minimize losses."

Tirpitz nodded. "I share your sentiment, but the Army's leadership under Little Moltke is resistant to change. Convincing them will be a herculean task."

Oscar's gaze turned cold. "Moltke's tenure will not last. I won't wait for him to lead us into disaster before replacing him. The moment I gain full authority, his time as Chief of Staff will end."

Tirpitz handed Oscar a document. "Your Highness, this is a small order from the Navy. Though we don't require large quantities of rifles, as our personnel are mostly on ships, the weapons will be used by our forces stationed at naval bases."

Oscar glanced at the document and nodded. "Thank you, Marshal. I understand the Navy's limitations, and I appreciate your efforts to support us."

Tirpitz smiled. "Your Highness, I believe the German Arms Company has a promising future, despite the current obstacles. But I sense you have something else on your mind."

Oscar leaned forward. "Indeed, Marshal. I've been considering a new initiative that could benefit both the Navy and the German Arms Company. I propose the establishment of a Marine Corps—a specialized force for amphibious operations. This corps would act as the Navy's ground combat force, tasked with securing beachheads during landing operations and reducing casualties for the Army."

Tirpitz's eyes lit up with interest. "A Marine Corps? That's a bold idea, Your Highness. Such a force would strengthen the Navy's position considerably. However, I anticipate significant resistance from the Army. They may see it as encroachment on their domain."

Oscar nodded. "I've considered that. To avoid unnecessary friction, we'll start small—perhaps a brigade or division—and make it clear that their purpose is strictly amphibious operations. Over time, their success will speak for itself, and expansion can follow."

Tirpitz thought for a moment before extending his hand. "Your Highness, you have my full support. This initiative could redefine the Navy's role and expand its capabilities."

Oscar shook his hand firmly. "Thank you, Marshal. Together, we'll make this vision a reality."

As Oscar departed the Admiralty, his mind raced with possibilities. The Marine Corps would not only serve as a formidable military asset but also as a tool to consolidate his influence. Back at the German Arms Company, Krupp set to work adjusting their production plans, determined to overcome the obstacles ahead.

Meanwhile, opposition from entrenched interests like Mauser, Rheinmetall, and Little Moltke loomed large. But Oscar remained undeterred. The establishment of the Marine Corps marked the first step in a broader strategy to reshape the military landscape and secure Germany's future.
