章 40: Chapter 40: Tang Wulin and Xie Xie’s Shock and Disappointment
"This really is a world that values appearance!" Xie Xie had no idea how many times he had sighed this phrase.
"Hiss—" Tang Wulin, wincing from the pain in his back, replied, "Not only does he look good, but he's also much stronger than us. He didn't even use any spirit skills, and we were already defeated."
"Are you okay?" Xie Xie asked with genuine concern before quickly adding, "Wulin, why do you always praise others while belittling yourself?"
"But aren't I just stating the truth?" Tang Wulin replied innocently, leaving Xie Xie speechless. Xie Xie had half a mind to knock on Tang Wulin's head to see if he was truly clueless or just pretending.
"Since we lost, you won't be getting that free gourmet meal!" Xie Xie teased, only to hear Tang Wulin let out a mournful sigh, muttering disappointedly, "That's the worst part!"
Meanwhile, Xu Xiaoyan, standing with the other Class One students, couldn't help but pout. She had noticed the small interactions between Jing Shaoyu and Gu Yue during the match, and it left her feeling frustrated. She resolved to ignore him forever... or so she thought. After a moment, she revised that decision to a day, then to two hours, and eventually down to three minutes. Her feelings were a tangled mess, caught between wanting to express her displeasure and the fear of actually alienating her crush.
Jing Shaoyu was unaware of Xu Xiaoyan's inner conflict. He was still on the stage when Long Hengxu arrived to announce, "The final round of the first-year promotion matches has concluded. Class Five failed in their challenge against Class One. Class One will retain its original rank, while Class Five will be promoted to Class Two. Other classes will move down accordingly. This year's first-year promotion matches are officially over."
The students of the newly promoted Class Two left with expressions of disappointment. Their teacher, Wu Zhangkong, kept his face expressionless as he led them out. Yet in his heart, he couldn't shake the curiosity and awe Jing Shaoyu's spirit power had stirred in him. "Could it be... a Life Attribute Spirit or perhaps an Extreme Wood Spirit?"
After leaving the stage, Jing Shaoyu was surrounded by excited classmates, each admiring him more than ever. Watching Wu Zhangkong leave, Ye Yingluo felt unexpectedly hollow; she realized that even winning hadn't brought her the satisfaction she'd expected.
"Alright, everyone. Head home if you're leaving, or go back to the dorms if you're staying," Ye Yingluo announced.
"Yes, goodbye, Teacher Ye!" the students chorused before scattering in groups. Wang Jinxi and Zhang Yangzi approached Jing Shaoyu to say their goodbyes before they too headed off.
Soon, the vast field became empty, with only Jing Shaoyu and Xu Xiaoyan remaining. He walked her to the academy gate, where she got into her family car.
"Goodbye, Brother Jing," she said with a bright smile, "Oh, and don't take Gu Yue home again! I'll be checking!"
"Got it!" Jing Shaoyu laughed, promising, "I'll definitely not invite her."
Giggling, Xu Xiaoyan waved and got into the car. Jing Shaoyu watched her leave with a slight shake of his head before turning back towards the academy to get his bike.
As he approached the dorm, he was surprised to see Xie Xie struggling to carry Tang Wulin, whose face was pale with pain. "What happened?" Jing Shaoyu asked instinctively.
"It's you!" Xie Xie exclaimed, glaring with a mixture of shock and anger. "It's because of you! Wulin's back was injured by your attack, so I'm taking him to the infirmary!"
Jing Shaoyu was momentarily taken aback. Could he have really hurt Tang Wulin that badly? With his physique, it seemed unlikely. But then he recalled that Tang Wulin hadn't unlocked his Golden Dragon King seal yet, so his body was only as strong as an average Spirit Master.
Seeing Tang Wulin wince, Jing Shaoyu let out a sigh. "You're in luck, running into me."
Xie Xie assumed Jing Shaoyu was offering to help carry Tang Wulin and began to murmur his thanks, but then he saw Jing Shaoyu activate his spirit. "What are you...?"
Jing Shaoyu merely smiled and placed a hand on Tang Wulin's back. The purple glow of his spirit ring enveloped them both, mesmerizing Xie Xie with its brilliance.
When he looked back, Tang Wulin had already recovered, his expression full of vitality as he stood up. "W-what happened?" Xie Xie stammered.
"Yeah, what happened?" Tang Wulin wondered, gingerly touching his now pain-free back.
After a moment, the two turned toward Jing Shaoyu, who had put away his spirit and was smiling calmly. "Formally introducing myself: Jing Shaoyu, Level 28 Healing Spirit Master."
"A... healing spirit master?!" Tang Wulin and Xie Xie were dumbfounded.
With a grin, Jing Shaoyu gave them each a pat on the shoulder before heading out of the dorm, leaving the two boys to process their shock and disappointment. Tang Wulin looked after him, quietly thinking that this must be the kind of genius Wu Zhangkong had spoken of. He needed to work even harder.
As Jing Shaoyu pedaled away from the academy, he thought to himself that helping Tang Wulin was simply a friendly gesture. After all, they'd soon be classmates after the typhoon ended.
