Chapter 64: Mind Reading

Standing before Tenshi, Baishi ignored his pleading gaze, placed a hand on his head, and activated the Mind Reading Jutsu, a secret technique of the Yamanaka clan.

Immediately, Tenshi felt an overwhelming spiritual force invade his mind, forcefully unlocking the doors to his deepest memories and rifling through them with no regard for order or secrecy.

Baishi had acquired the Yamanaka clan's techniques from Danzo, but with no formal training, he had been forced to figure them out on his own. As a result, his method was crude, lacking the finesse of a trained Yamanaka ninja, and was instead direct and forceful. For most ninjas, such a rough intrusion would be dangerous, possibly lethal to the subject and highly taxing to the user. However, Baishi's immense spiritual strength allowed him to endure the strain, and he didn't care about Tenshi's survival.

This method worked in his favor, saving time as he skipped through irrelevant memories to find what he needed.

Baishi confirmed that his identity hadn't been fully exposed. Only a few high-ranking individuals within Konoha were aware of him. Tenshi, it turned out, wasn't among them. He had learned about Baishi through Orochimaru, who had spoken briefly about a figure called "Jia." This code name was known only to a select few.

Digging deeper, Baishi uncovered the origins of the 'fishmen' and 'half-fishmen.' As expected, they were the result of human experimentation conducted at a research base on Demon Island, overseen by Orochimaru himself. What surprised Baishi was discovering that Konoha had been directly involved in the project. Many of the personnel at the base were medical-ninjas from Konoha.

It made sense. Even with Baishi's cells as a catalyst, Orochimaru alone wouldn't have been able to develop amphibious ninjas so quickly. With the war escalating, Konoha had likely resorted to desperate measures to gain an advantage. Most of the 'half-fishmen' were originally civilians, which explained their lack of combat experience. Their purpose, however, was clear: these experiments aimed to create amphibious ninjas to harass the Lands of Water and Lightning. Konoha hoped to provoke a war between Kumogakure and Kirigakure or at least divert attention and resources from the main battlefield.

Baishi also realized why this base had been strategically placed. The surrounding waters offered access to both the Land of Water and the Land of Lightning. The proximity to the Land of Spice ensured a steady supply of resources if handled carefully.

What remained unclear was how he had been exposed. Searching Tenshi's memories, Baishi discovered that the scout 'half-fishman' possessed an extraordinary sense of smell, derived from certain fish species. This ability, combined with the ultrasonic detection of another guard, made them highly effective trackers. Even with his best efforts to mask his scent, Baishi's level IV [Enhanced Senses] couldn't match the fishman's hyper-sensitive nose.

With the scout dead, there was no way to confirm this definitively, but Baishi was confident that the sense of smell had been his undoing.

Reflecting on these revelations, Baishi considered the consequences of wiping out Tenshi's team. If he thoroughly disposed of the bodies, Konoha wouldn't be able to trace the incident back to him. However, it was unlikely Konoha would abandon the project entirely. Even if this base was compromised, they would likely relocate. Their objectives would remain unchanged, keeping the amphibious ninja force active in the region.

This gave Baishi a headache. If Konoha continued its operations, the waters near Moon Island would inevitably become a battleground. Ninja from Konoha, Kumogakure, and Kirigakure would converge, turning the area into chaos. Moon Island, nestled in this very region, would no longer remain hidden.

Sighing in frustration, Baishi crushed Tenshi's skull without hesitation and began cleaning up the battlefield.

He gathered the bodies, ensuring no trace was left behind, and transported them in batches to Moon Island. There, he dumped them into the island's magma river, where they were incinerated completely. Burying the bodies locally was too risky, and traveling further wasn't worth the effort. The magma river ensured total destruction.

Watching the bodies dissolve into ash, Baishi nodded in satisfaction. Without any physical trail left behind and using the Flying Thunder God Technique for travel, he was confident no one could track him. The incident would remain an unsolved mystery.

With the corpses destroyed, Baishi took time to recover his chakra before moving on to his original task: purchasing supplies. To avoid suspicion, he bypassed the port near the base and ventured into the interior of the Land of Spice. There, he bought food in small quantities from various towns to avoid drawing attention.

Fortunately, he had recovered several storage scrolls from the underwater base, which simplified transporting the supplies back to Moon Island. Within a short time, he had secured enough food to last for the foreseeable future, ensuring that he could remain on Moon Island without needing to venture out frequently.

Baishi understood that the conflict in the region was far from over, but for now, he had done everything he could to protect his sanctuary. Moon Island remained hidden, at least for the time being. As he stored the supplies, he resolved to monitor the situation closely and adapt as needed. The ninja world was unpredictable, but Baishi was determined to remain one step ahead.
