章 35: Gil-kun and the Unexpected Weapon

Cortés expression turned dead serious.

For the first time in the fight, the King of Heroes started advancing.

"N-No... please wait... Goldie... go away... go away..."

Nero kept begging as she weakly lifted her sword and walked toward him. Before she could even hit him, however, she found herself enveloped by golden chains. She tried breaking free from them, but the more she tried freeing herself, the more tightly those chains bound her.

"Stay here fool, while I take care of these insolent pests."

He said without turning back as he kept moving forward.

"Archers!" Cortés shouted as the army from the East unleashed a storm of arrows.

This time though, instead of matching it with his Gate of Babylon, Gilgamesh simply walked forward, while the arrows kept getting closer and closer.

From his vault, Gilgamesh took out a small potion of a weird colour and proceeded to drink just a few drops. The plagues from his disease and the effects of the poison immediately looked completely nullified.

"That's impossible!" Cortés exclaimed.

"Could it be... a potion that regresses age?" Agrippina speculated, and she was correct.

Just as the weapons were about to hit him, they were unexpectedly repelled.

"W-what the hell happened?" Agrippina asked, now being the confused one.

"I could barely see it, but at the very last moment... something blocked them." Cortés commented as drops of sweat started forming on his head.

Around the King of Heroes, flying disks orbited around him. The archers shot again, and this time, Cortés could see more clearly that those flying disks moved automatically whenever something got too close to the ruler of Uruk and blocked it, and when they were all busy, some kind of amulet would appear and deviate the arrow, or a cloth would wrap itself around the projectile before vanishing, or even what appeared like precious stones and gems would explode on contact, stopping the momentum of the attack.

"He keeps pulling more and more tricks. Well, no matter, the army of El Dorado will swarm him, and he will be forced to focus on them."

The golden robots, who in the meantime had managed to reform, started rushing at him at great speed, attempting a combined attack with the ranged troops. Just then, in the middle of the battlefield, an incense burner appeared and released a dense cloud of fumes.

The soldiers continued their march regardless. They had already pinpointed where their enemy was, a little smoke wouldn't have been enough to stop them. They reached the foe, and, with resolute and heavy strikes, they stabbed him, pierced him, cut him, tore him apart, broke his bones, snapped his neck, killed him without any chance for him to react, they killed... him... they killed... him...

"What are you doing, fools?!" Cortés cried out in disbelief as the inhuman humans dropped to the ground, having eliminated each other.

Growing increasingly furious and worried as he could see the King of Heroes getting closer and closer, the Spanish general dismantled the entire city, transforming it into an enormous army that attempted to stop that man, no, that hero clad in gold.

Just then, the giant, who had retreated to avoid getting caught in the crossfire of the archers, moved in for a strike of his gargantuan blade.

"You, foolish mongrel who seeks to challenge your rightful ruler." Gilgamesh announced, addressing Cortés directly. "I have a question for you. What is a weapon?"

Cortés stared at him, unsure whether to respond or not.

"I'm sure that you know, having learned it from conquering and manipulating others throughout your entire life. You, prideful general of a ruthless army, the winner against the great empire and the biggest and most prosperous city of the New World you plagued into submission. You couldn't have achieved such accomplishments without knowing what a weapon truly is."

"Well, what about it? What do you think a weapon is?" Cortés answered, trying to distract him as he ordered his troops to attack him with everything they had.

"Since you refuse to, I shall give you the definition of something you know all too well. But it seems that even the words of your king don't reach you, therefore, I shall first show it to you... through my strength."

Far, far away, where there once was a mountain...

"Monsieur Eiffel... do you have... any idea how-"

"No, no. I have absolutely no clue how this is even remotely possible. Do you have a plausible explanation, Monsieur Galilei?"

"I'm afraid not, I'm stunned too. You know much better than me that such a structure cannot be built completely with gold. What do you think, Mr. Tesla?"

"I think that the only conclusion is that this must not be gold, despite appearing to be. Perhaps it's simply coloured steel, or something similar. Don't you agree, Mendelev?"

"Mmm, it's difficult to say... but if it were paint, I doubt it would be this perfect and in such an immaculate condition for a long period... I suppose the only way we can know for sure is to take a sample and analyse it. We might have just discovered a completely new element, gentlemen."

As the group of scientists moved closer to the giant, gold-like building, cracks started to appear around the ground that was supporting it, a strong wind started blowing, and the sound of metal moving echoed through the air.

The landmark, resembling in every little detail a certain French tower, slowly started levitating, much to the amazement and flabbergasteness of the witnesses. Then, it started tilting more and more, until it was now positioned horizontally in midair. Finally, after a second of laying motionless, it soared forth, as powerful and as fast as a rocket launched into space, creating a sonic boom that shook the nearby mountains and disappearing in an instant from the eyes of the speechless scientists, who had no clue of what just happened.

"... Well... I guess our samples will have to wait..."

Pathetic, the puny human wasn't even trying to block or evade his attack. The giant grinned, conscious of his overwhelming power and certain that this would be the finishing blow.

And, to be fair, he was right.

Gilgamesh lifted his arm in the sky, twisted it around, and pushed it forward.

Half a second later, something incomprehensibly fast and big roared for a brief instant, blinding everyone from the light produced by the flames that it produced by ripping through the air.

Another half second passed, and the sound of an explosion deafened everyone as an earthquake made reality all around them blurry and an unstoppable shockwave could be felt penetrating the veins and the bones of every living thing that was even remotely near to the golden city.

A rain of ashes fell down on the ground, which was now molten lava. Those were what remained of the giant's bones. Little puddles of liquid gold could be seen by the survivors, the corpses of the metal servants of El Dorado that were caught in the blast.

And in the middle of it all, an impenetrable fortress of shields stood magnificently as they slowly disappeared, revealing a totally unscathed Gilgamesh.

He stared at a concerned Cortés dead in the eyes.

"A weapon is whatever you can use in a battle. That was your mistake, mongrels. You used something that was mine without my permission. And now you will pay with your lives."

The King of Heroes kept walking forward, getting closer and closer to the temple.
