章 48: Chapter 48 (edited)

At that moment, Kara, Bruce, and the future Commissioner Gordon stood together, gazing at the chaotic remnants of Arkham Island behind them.

Contrary to popular belief, Arkham Island wasn't entirely consumed by the asylum. There were still civilians living in scattered pockets of the island, though now the streets were desolate and eerie.

"I don't have any backup here. Every special unit officer in Gotham has been dispatched. But as you can see, they're all down," Gordon said, his voice tight with frustration. He glanced at the antidote vial in his hand, his expression grim. "If it weren't for the antidote Miss Rachel gave me, I'd be in the same state."

Bruce, standing tall in his imposing suit, growled in his low, gravelly tone, "That's why we're here."

Kara raised an eyebrow, throwing Bruce a sideways glance. "Oh, you have time to comfort him now? How touching," she quipped, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Do you want me to step away so you two can have a heartfelt moment? Because, in case you've forgotten, there's an apocalypse brewing."

This was Gordon's first encounter with the Oracle-like woman standing beside Batman, and he was clearly unprepared for her razor-sharp wit. Her presence, though unsettling, seemed to bring an odd dynamic to the situation.

Before Kara could fire off another cutting remark, Bruce swiftly cut to the point. "Arkham Island is just the beginning."

Kara fell silent, her eyes narrowing as Bruce continued, "They're planning to disperse the toxin across Gotham through the city's water system. Using the Wayne Enterprises' central hub, they'll release the toxin as a gas with the help of a microwave emitter."

Gordon's face paled. "If they succeed... Gotham will be destroyed."

Bruce nodded solemnly. The League of Shadows, led by Ra's al Ghul, was hell-bent on razing Gotham to the ground, convinced the city was beyond redemption.

Kara scowled. As someone with her own ruthless streak, even she found their methods abhorrent. "Destroying the corrupt is one thing," she muttered, "but targeting innocents? That's cowardly."

It was precisely because of this conviction that she'd agreed to help Bruce. Gotham wasn't her city, but its people didn't deserve to pay for the sins of a few.

"How do they plan to move the emitter to Wayne Tower?" Gordon asked, quickly understanding the urgency of the situation.

Bruce's voice was grim. "They're transporting it via the monorail system."

Kara facepalmed, letting out an exasperated groan. "Let me get this straight. The city didn't bother shutting down the monorail? And it's a single-track system? So there's only one train that can go back and forth?" She rolled her eyes. "Gotham's city planners really dropped the ball on this one."

Bruce ignored her commentary, focusing on the task at hand. "We need to stop the train before it reaches Wayne Tower," he said, turning to Gordon. "I need your help."

Gordon blinked, caught off guard. "What can I do?"

Bruce handed him the keys to the Batmobile. "You're going to destroy the elevated tracks before the train reaches the city."

Gordon stared at the keys, dumbfounded. "You want me, a cop, to blow up city infrastructure?"

Bruce's piercing gaze didn't waver. "It's the only way to stop them. If the emitter reaches Wayne Tower, it's over."

Kara smirked, clearly enjoying Gordon's inner turmoil. "Do you even know how to drive that thing?" she teased.

Gordon glanced at her, visibly nervous. The Batmobile looked more like a tank than a car, and the thought of navigating it across a damaged bridge was daunting.

Bruce, accustomed to Kara's incessant jabs, led Gordon to the vehicle and began a crash course on its controls. "It's just a manual transmission," he said, though the complicated dashboard told a different story.

Gordon's expression darkened as he stared at the overwhelming array of buttons. "Manual transmission? This thing looks like it belongs in a fighter jet!"

Kara chuckled. "Good luck, Commissioner. Try not to blow yourself up before you blow up the tracks."

Bruce shot her a warning glare before turning back to Gordon. "You've got this," he said firmly.

Taking a deep breath, Gordon gripped the keys. "Alright. I'll do it."

He grabbed his radio, barking an order. "This is Gordon. Lower the bridge!"

Kara snorted, crossing her arms. "Yeah, good luck with that. The bridge controls are probably offline like everything else."

Sure enough, there was no response from the other end of the line. Gordon sighed, realizing he had no choice but to make the leap across the gap.

Bruce turned to Kara. "Our turn."

Kara cracked her knuckles, a dangerous gleam in her eyes. "Finally. I was getting bored."

As Gordon climbed into the Batmobile, mentally bracing himself for the stunt of his life, Bruce and Kara disappeared into the shadows, heading toward their next confrontation with Ra's al Ghul and the League of Shadows.
