As Jonny Blaze imagined all the super soldiers, Billy, who had given it his all, had already charged toward him.
"Boom!"
"Watch out! Move aside—uh—" Starlight cut off her warning angrily.
Jonny Blaze glanced down at the fist on his chest, then slowly raised his head to meet Billy's shocked expression.
"Does it hurt?"
Does it hurt? Are his bones broken?!
Billy barely had time to process his shock before he swung his other hand, aiming a punch at Jonny Blaze's face.
Jonny wasn't the type to go easy on someone's face. He wasn't like that jerk Homelander, who'd make you feel good about being humiliated. He didn't play by the rules. So, as Billy's punch neared his face, Jonny casually raised his leg and kicked Billy away.
It was a split-second difference, but it made all the difference!
As Billy flew through the air, about to disappear from sight—
Suddenly, the wind picked up!
Starlight was just about to smooth down her disheveled hair when her eyes widened in shock. She saw Billy being lifted off the ground, gripped tightly by Jonny Blaze around the neck!
She almost thought she was seeing things!
How could this be possible?! Billy had been sent flying, and in the blink of an eye, Jonny Blaze had him held like a rag doll!
Starlight was dumbfounded. Huey was dumbfounded. Even Billy was dumbfounded!
"You, you have super speed?!" Huey asked, his voice distant, immediately thinking of the only super-speedster he knew: A-Train. It reminded him of how A-Train had killed his girlfriend in an instant, moving so fast that no one even realized what had happened.
"No, wait! You killed people at the nightclub with heat vision like Homelander! How do you have so many powers? How did you turn him into a Superman? What the hell are you?!"
Huey's disbelief grew louder and more frantic, but Jonny Blaze shut him up with a single look.
Huey immediately lowered his head, stepped back, and shrank away, his submission almost pitiful in its practiced ease.
Jonny Blaze didn't waste any time on Huey and didn't care to bother with Billy either. It wasn't that he had a soft spot for them; he was just in a good mood.
After all, when Billy fought Starlight earlier, he'd dropped the Super Soldier Serum as if it were some sort of battle loot. Now, fighting him, he dropped the serum again!
Was Billy just that lucky, or was Jonny Blaze's luck simply off the charts?
"Why!" Billy rasped, grabbing Jonny's wrist with both hands, his face red and twisted in pain. He growled, "Why did you turn me into a Superman? Are you an enemy—or a friend?"
"Friend or foe?"
"That's for you to decide."
Jonny Blaze released Billy, then turned toward Starlight with a smirk. Wrapping his arm around her waist, he shot into the sky, disappearing into the night.
Billy silently picked up the scattered documents from the ground. He had thought Jonny Blaze would kill him or hand him over to Vought, but instead, Jonny had turned him into a Superman!
"Are you okay?" Huey asked quietly, watching the dazed Billy. "Do you know who they are?"
"We'll find out."
Billy shook his head. The woman didn't matter, but the Asian man—
That man had powers like heat vision, super speed, flight, super strength, and invulnerability. And to top it off, he had the ability to turn others into Supermen!
Who was this powerful and mysterious figure? Where did he come from?
He seemed to know a lot about Billy—he even knew Billy had evidence against Vought and the Supes. But what was his goal in making Billy a Superman?
Confused, Billy limped out of the alley with Huey, heading for a nearby bar.
He needed Huey to review the documents, so they could solidify their resolve to take down Vought. He also needed time to figure out what his life would be like now that he was a Superman.
Jonny Blaze had turned Billy into a Superman to test the success rate of the Super Soldier Serum. After all, a failed serum would result in death. He wasn't particularly fond of Billy, so if Billy died, it wouldn't be a great loss. Better him than one of Jonny's own people in the future, right?
But since the serum succeeded, Billy had become a super soldier—a Superman, even.
If the serum had failed, Jonny would have simply gone back and killed Homelander for revenge.
Now, Jonny was ready to test another theory: would the Super Soldier Serum also work perfectly on someone who had already been enhanced with Compound V? Could those abilities be combined?
If Compound V didn't conflict with the serum, then the army Jonny wanted to build could become even more powerful!
Back on the street, Starlight hesitantly asked, "Where are you going now? Can I go home?"
"The feet are yours. You can go wherever you want," Jonny responded indifferently.
Starlight pressed on, "Didn't you say I made you excited? Don't you regret letting me go? Or were you never interested in me in the first place? Was all that excitement fake?"
Her tone and demeanor seemed off, as if she was more upset than she realized.
Jonny looked at her with a knowing smile until she finally averted her embarrassed gaze. Then, calmly, he said, "Things that are easily lost aren't worth regretting."
What did that mean?
Because she didn't want to join the Seven, did that make her something easily discarded? Did he not care at all?
Did he know how much courage it took for her to approach him?
Did he realize how important what he dismissed so easily was to her?!
She was furious!
Starlight wasn't a doll without feelings. She didn't dare show her temper with Jonny, but that didn't mean she didn't have one.
"I'm going home!" she announced stiffly.
Jonny waved casually. "Goodbye."
Starlight glared at him as he walked away, cursing under her breath, "I never want to see you again, you jerk—"
Jonny, now far away, suddenly turned and looked back at her. Starlight's words caught in her throat, and she pretended to wave down a cab.
When she was sure Jonny had turned away and disappeared, she glanced around one last time. He was gone.
Anger and frustration—along with a trace of something she didn't fully understand—made her stamp her foot in fury.
The ground cracked under her force.
