章 73: 73. Origin
"Your current eyes were taken by Uchiha Hiro from the body of an invader," Uchiha Igaku revealed the origin of Uchiha Gin's eyes.
"Technically, you shouldn't be able to awaken the Sharingan," the elder said as he stared at Uchiha Gin's slightly reddened eyes. He had been surprised when Gin first activated the Sharingan since eye transplants were not uncommon in the clan. Due to some forbidden jutsu, ordinary Sharingan could be used as consumables.
"Then what's the situation with my eyes?" Gin asked, touching his eye sockets, recalling how his Sharingan awakened. It seemed closely tied to the system. Was it due to the system's rewards?
"There are a few possibilities," Uchiha Igaku began to explain after thinking for a moment. "First, the eyes might have been switched, and the ones you received could be from a clan member."
This possibility seemed unlikely since Uchiha Haru and Uchiha Hiro were well aware of Gin's physical condition at the time. A rash transplant could have worsened his health and caused further harm.
"Second, your body might have assimilated the eyes."
"Assimilated?" Gin was encountering a gap in his knowledge for the first time, and he looked at Igaku with a confused expression, hoping for an explanation.
"The human eye has countless blood vessels and lymphatic vessels that keep it functioning. After the transplant, your blood took over the eye, changing its fundamental nature," Igaku speculated. "This seems the most likely explanation. The human body has mysteries even I couldn't fully uncover after a lifetime of research."
Gin nodded thoughtfully.
"In fact, I have another guess," Igaku continued after a pause, clearly recalling something.
"What is it?" Gin interrupted his own thoughts, intrigued.
"I've spent years researching bloodlines. Our clan collected many experimental materials during wartime, and after studying these samples, I discovered something interesting," Igaku said, his remaining eye moving as though recalling old memories. Gin listened attentively without interrupting.
"I found that several unrelated ninja clans share similar genetic chains. I initially thought this was due to intermarriage over centuries, but some of these clans are long-standing enemies, with no possibility of cross-breeding."
"Senju, Uzumaki, Hagoromo, Hyūga, Kaguya…" Yao listed the names of several clans, "and Uchiha."
These are all descendants of the Ōtsutsuki clan, Gin thought. Knowing the story, he understood that all the clans mentioned descended from the once-arriving Ōtsutsuki.
"And your eyes came from a member of the Kaguya clan, a mix of Kaguya and Hyūga bloodlines," Igaku finally revealed.
What?
Gin was dumbfounded. His eyes were from a hybrid of Kaguya and Hyūga?
"Wait, let me process this, it's a bit confusing," Gin said, feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of his eyes' origins.
He was an Uchiha, his eyes came from a Kaguya-Hyūga hybrid, and on top of that, the system gave him an Uzumaki bloodline. All he needed now were Senju and Hagoromo bloodlines to complete the Ōtsutsuki lineage and shoot for the stars.
"Because of the shared genetic segments in their bloodline, these eyes adapted to your body, transforming into a Sharingan. If you were from the Hyūga clan, you'd likely awaken the Byakugan with these eyes," Igaku continued to explain.
So, they're self-adaptive plug-and-play? Gin thought, baffled.
"Since you've already awakened the Sharingan, it shows that these eyes are highly compatible with you. With some nurturing, you'll awaken the Mangekyō in no time," Igaku said, trying to comfort Gin, mistakenly thinking he was uncomfortable with having non-clan bloodline eyes.
"You'll need a proper trigger to awaken the Mangekyō," Igaku said. Gin had previously awakened the Mangekyō, so it was clear he had the talent to do it again.
"Alright," Gin replied, understanding the hidden truth behind the trigger. However, he had no close loved ones or deep bonds with anyone in this world. How would he awaken the Mangekyō now?
"I might have a solution, though I'm unsure if it'll work," Igaku said, noticing Gin's anxiety and thinking for a moment.
"Please help me, Grandfather!" Gin immediately bowed, willing to endure anything for the power of Tsukuyomi.
"I didn't intend to tell you this so soon," Igaku said, shaking his head as he turned around. He opened a hidden compartment in the wall and pulled out a glass jar.
"These are your father's Sharingan," Igaku said, placing the jar, which contained two eyes soaked in green liquid, in front of Gin. Even after years apart from their owner, Gin could still feel the immense power held within those crimson eyes.
"These eyes recorded the entire process of your father being betrayed and killed by Uchiha Tajima. If you witness it, you're likely to awaken the Mangekyō," Igaku said, his voice full of deep hatred as he touched the jar.
Who was telling the truth? Gin's head hurt as he pondered over the conflicting stories. Everyone except his grandfather, Igaku, had said his father died protecting his comrades. Now, he could witness the truth with his own eyes.
"Focus your Sharingan's power on these eyes, and the sealed memory will appear," Igaku instructed. Gin followed the directions, and the tomoe in his eyes began to spin as cold chakra seeped into the Sharingan in the jar.
Nearby, Spectre watched the scene quietly, a strange glint in its dim eyes.
As Gin's chakra made contact, he felt his body lighten and was suddenly observing the scene from a third-person perspective.
A curly-haired man was rushing down a road, followed by several similarly dressed clansmen, all injured. Kunai and shuriken flew past them, reminding them they were being pursued.
"Captain, they're closing in on us!" shouted a young man whom Gin recognized as his uncle, Uchiha Tajima, in his twenties but already displaying an unsettling maturity.
"Don't panic. I'll hold them off while you escape," the curly-haired man, Uchiha Shinzo, spoke confidently, his soothing voice filled with assurance.
"Shinzo, don't be a hero! I'll stay with you," a stern-looking woman beside him snapped, biting her lip.
"I'll stay too!" young Tajima declared.
"Stop arguing! I can handle this alone. You'd only slow me down," Shinzo shook his head. "Go meet up with Fuka. I'll catch up soon."
With that, Shinzo turned to face the enemy.
"Damn it, that fool!" the woman cursed as she watched Shinzo fight alone. She turned to Tajima. "Tajima, you go ahead. I'm not leaving him behind."
Without waiting for an answer, she ran after Shinzo.
Tajima hesitated, his face shifting between uncertainty and resolve. Finally, as if making a crucial decision, he too followed them.
"What are you doing here? I told you to leave!" Shinzo shouted as he noticed them joining him, his voice filled with frustration.
"How could I abandon my family?" the woman replied coldly, drawing her weapon. Tajima silently activated his Sharingan, ready to fight.
The three of them fought fiercely, retreating as they battled. Just as they were about to make their escape, disaster struck.
"Tajima, what are you doing!?" Shinzo gasped in disbelief as he felt a sword pierce through his stomach. He turned to see Tajima, his expression twisted with madness.
"Sorry, brother-in-law. But if you live, I can never become the clan leader," Tajima said coldly as he twisted the blade, causing blood to gush from Shinzo's wound. Shinzo staggered and collapsed.
"No!" the woman's scream echoed as Shinzo's final vision faded, leaving only the chilling sight of Tajima's cold back.
