Side by side, the duo sat on the benchers located a few miles away from the pack house. It was then Sydney noticed how vast the compound was. Her former alpha's house didn't measure up to what she was seeing. There was a pitch in front of the benches where training equipment were scattered, even sports tools.
She turned to her acquaintance whose face grimaced with pain. Feeling guilty, she wanted to ask if he was okay but she couldn't bring herself to. The fog in the atmosphere had begun to lift and she could see how wide the pitch was. She wondered what it was used for since she hadn't seen anybody using it since she came.
"I'm sorry..." She managed to mutter after a while of tranquility between them. He didn't seem angry on the outside but she couldn't tell what was going on in his inside. She clutched waiting for his reply.
"Who would have thought the loud stubborn Sydney would be seeking approval from a stranger like a lost puppy?" He smiled and patted her hair gently. Her eyes opened wildly, wondering how he knew her name.
"You're quite famous around here, you know. Although, nobody knows your relationship with the alpha." He tilted his head, hoping he'd tell her but she only lowered her gaze and looked away. Telling him she was married to him might make him go far from her. At that confusing moment in her life, she needed a friend.
"Abel..." He stretched his hand to a shake. Warmly, she took his hand.
"Sydney... But you already knew that." She chuckled nervously, itching the back of her head.
"Why are you out so early?" He asked. "And I'm fine, by the way. You don't have to worry."
'I can't tell him I was trying to avoid the alpha in his bedroom.' She mentally slapped herself. But she couldn't think of a proper lie to tell him. She was quite terrible at lying and hiding things.
"Nothing important. It's like a tradition back at my house. When you wake up, you come out and breathe fresh air." She lied smoothly, even surprising herself.
'That came out great and unsuspecting. So much that I even believe myself. Way to go, Syd.' She complimented herself, not knowing Abel was watching her every expression.
"What is this place?" She asked, trying to divert the discussion from her.
"It looks like a training pitch."
She stood up, heading into the field to get a better view. Abel followed her, although still feeling some pain down there. To not let her find out, he had to swallow the pain.
'Remind me not to get on her bad side.' He shook his head.
"It is a training field. It's not busy now because training just started and for now, it's in the evenings. The alpha built to---"
"Do you know anything about the lake outside?" She interrupted him. She didn't know if it was because she didn't want to hear anything about the alpha or because she was simply curious.
He shrugged, leaving her disappointed.
"All I know is that everyone has been banned from going there. I heard it's possessed or something."
She nodded slowly, digesting every bit of information she got from him.
"You don't plan on going there, do you?" He knitted his brow, drawing closer to her. Turning to reply to him, she felt his breath on her face. They were only inches apart. Somehow, her eyes caught sight of Clara staring at them from afar. She quickly pushed away from Abel, hoping nobody else had seen them like that.
"We shouldn't get that close again, please." She requested, hiding her arms behind her back.
"I'm sorry... I was just trying to look out for you." He muttered, almost hitting himself for being too quick on her. She was very beautiful and he felt they could have a special connection given that they met unusually.
"But don't go close to that place if you have any intentions of doing so. The alpha will not be pleased with you."
"Thank you, Abel. I'll see you around." She retraced her steps back into the pack house. After having breakfast, she wandered around the house again, praying not to run into the alpha or his minions. When she couldn't find anything to do, she decided to sleep for a bit. Her body shut down immediately as she laid down close to the window facing the training ground.
After what seemed like minutes to her, she woke up to the sound of muffled grunts. Stretching and yawning, her eyes darted to the pitch to see some people training.
"Abel said training doesn't start till evening. Isn't it too early?" She thought to herself and got up. As she headed for the front door, her eyes flitted to the large wooden clock in the living room.
"Evening?" She yelled. "How long was I asleep?" She tried to remember if she had dreamt because there was no way she would sleep for over eight hours without dreaming. Much to her disappointment, she couldn't remember anything during her sleep. She waved it aside and finalized that she was still acclimating.
The yard felt empty, even the guards were not at their post this time. She wanted to ignore the open gate but the same voice from the previous day emerged in her head.
"Come." It commanded gently. "Come, Ari."
Like a hypnotized doll, she started walking. Her ocean blue eyes turned gold and all she saw was the dazzling streaks of lights that ensued from the nearby forest. She was drawn to it like a moth drawn to light. After walking for some minutes, her feet landed in front of the glowing lake. That was when she came back to her senses, wondering how she got there.
Her wolf, Ari, had been in charge after the voice called her name.
"Okay, I better leave here." Sydney resolved frightfully but was deterred by the spirit wolf that appeared from under the water. It was a white wolf that stood meters above her, staring into her eyes. Or no, into the soul of her wolf, Ari.
"Sister..." It sang, leading Sydney into the water. The water felt warm and magical, leaving her to want more but her wonderful time was interrupted by the breaking sound of twigs.
Not wanting to know who was there, Sydney ran for her life.
"Well, that went well." A lady in black appeared from behind the bushes she hid. She had a dagger in her hand and stared angrily at the spirit wolf.
"You had your chance!" She screamed, throwing black ash at the wolf, causing it to whimper in pain and submit to her.
"If you fail the next time, I will have you killed and you will never reunite with me." She seethed, watching Sydney run back to the pack house through her palm. She watched how she ran into Ryder who smiled warmly at her.
"Oh Ryder my love, how I've missed you. We will soon be together." Tears rolled down her cheeks as she spoke, recounting the days when she was his favorite girl.
