章 38: Under Bruno's Watchful Eyes

My mother reached for my hand, but I pulled away immediately I saw her get closer.

"Please, Maria," she whispered, tears in her eyes. "For us. Just… let it go."

But I couldn't. I couldn't let it go, not after what I'd learned, not with my sister's face still haunting me. 

She deserved justice, even if no one else was willing to give it to her. And if I had to be the one to find out the truth, I'd do it alone.

I stood up, ignoring the pleading look on my mother's face, and looked at Marcy. 

"Come on. We're leaving."

Marcy got to her feet, throwing a wary glance at my parents. 

"I don't think it's a good idea to leave. If we keep putting pressure on them, they might come clean" Marcy said.

I could feel their eyes on my back, but I didn't care. They'd chosen their silence, and I was choosing the truth.
