CHAPTER 13
Serene
"What did he just come to my place?" I asked myself, while cautiously opening the door.
"Good evening, madam. I am looking for Ms. Serene Brights," the man waiting at the door stated to me. I knew he was a puzzle driver merely by glancing at his clothing and reading what was printed on his batch.
"Is everything OK, Ma'am?" He questioned, perhaps assuming something was amiss with his outfit after I gazed at it for about two minutes.
"Oh sure, everything is fine. My name is Serene Brights," I said, my mind racing with inquiries.
The delivery lad walked to his vehicle and returned with a present bag. He handed it to me, and I immediately signed the paperwork before he departed. Doubts about the present bag being mine began to wash over me. I had not opened it yet, but I could see how expensive everything inside was. I unzipped the bag and withdrew the first box, which contained a stunning dazzling diamond necklace. I held it out and ran my fingertips along its borders. I stared at it with bewilderment and returned it in the box. I retrieved the second package, which contained golden earrings of my preferred type, I shook my head, and placed it in the back. I opened the last box, which included a lovely bracelet labeled 'Love'.
I placed all three boxes on my table and examined the contents once more. I quickly realized that I had not seen who had bought me the gifts; I had not even been here for a month but someone sent me all this pricey stuff. I investigated the gift bag, but there was no card to identify who sent them. I put everything back in the present bag and was ready to go upstairs when a message came on my phone stating, "Hi lovely, I hope you accept the small gift I got you, I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow Max Cruz."
"What?" I told myself.
He went so far as to purchase me all of these things. What is the point of all this, and how did he acquire my address? I can not ask this since his company's top investors, thus acquiring my address was too simple for him. I am not sure what to do now; this may be a hint that he will show up here at any time.
'I will not put myself through agony again; I will have to return this present,' I told myself as I left them on the table and hurried upstairs. I entered my room and closed the door. I am not sure why it felt so hot, even though I had taken a shower earlier. I hurriedly grabbed my towel and proceeded to take another shower. When I stepped out, I quickly put on my pajamas and sat in front of the mirror. I smiled at myself as I glanced at my glowing face, remembering how my mother used to pamper me, and now I will be a mother as well. I am not sure what my child might look like, but I am confident it would have the same enthusiasm as myself. I could already envision how cute it would be, but then I burst into tears.
My tears were just pouring from my eyes as I thought what my child's life might be like if his father were around. But his comments lingered in my head: "I am happy you lost the baby; I doubt I would have been a good father to that child."
'Life has been unkind to me, but I will make sure it is fair to my child,' I said to myself, wiping away my tears. Before getting into my plus-sized bed, I stood up and draped a blanket over it. I was about to fall asleep when my phone buzzed, waking me up. I quickly retrieved it off the table and returned to Neina's video chat.
"Hello," I answered, noticing Charlotte too.
"Hello," they said, waving at me.
"How are you doing, Serene?" They inquired, and I felt a tingle in my stomach.
"Serene," they said as they noted the alteration in my face.
I looked up and said, "Yes."
"What happened?" they questioned with anxious looks.
"Nothing, I just felt a movement," I answered.
They questioned, "You mean down there?" and I nodded giving a positive response.
They cheered, and we talked for quite a while until the call terminated. I slept well and awoke full of energy the next morning. I hurriedly freshened up and dashed to start breakfast. When I finished, I got down on my couch and started working on some papers from home when my phone rang.
I took it up out of ignorance.
"Hello, Ms. Brights." A familiar voice came from the other end, and I could not believe Max had phoned me again.
