章 55: C55: Matryoshka Spread

[POV's]

"Is it that exaggerated? I want to see what magic this 'Escape' has!"

Sitting in front of my computer, shirtless with a short haircut like Zhao Xina and towering at 1.92 meters like Xiao Kane, I took a deep breath. People often say horror games are terrifying, but I've never been interested in some flimsy horror.

Yet, I had heard that "Escape" was made by the same designer as "To the Moon,", and this piqued my curiosity. After all to the moon really set my heart on the moon.

Don't be fooled by my tough-guy exterior—muscles everywhere, the classic macho look—but deep down, I'm a bit of a softie.

Wait... Wait... Wait...

Who mentions such things in a Web Novel...

I am only a translator, translating writer thought...

Yeah, I shed tears too. For "To the Moon", I did that. I cried like a baby hugging my panda plushie.

So, I've kept an eye on Neon Games and the Chen Xu movement. Lately, everyone's been buzzing about his new horror game, "Escape." So I decided Fine, I figured I'd give it a try. How scary could it be?

With the curiosity fueling me, I bought the game, installed it, and dove right in.

"Huh... trying to be all mysterious? I know what is going to happen! Praise the Lord of Love Chen Xu!"

I did my ritual and finally dove in.

Standing before the eerie Mental Hospital, I felt an odd sense of confidence. "I've got this," I thought. No big deal. I will conquer this with my love.

"Huh... that's it?!" I muttered, unimpressed. From climbing shelves to switching off lights, everything felt underwhelming as in Undertale.

"Come on... open the door, cue the jump scare? There's nothing to be afraid of," I spoke to myself.

Then the corpse rushed toward me as I cracked the door open not so lovingly.

"Wait... don't come here!" I shouted.

In the hallway, a wheelchair-bound patient reached out like he wanted an embrace of hot passionate love. My heart raced, My face paled, and My body nailed as I screamed aloud veiled. Things were starting to get a little too feisty.

An hour later, I collapsed into my chair, panting hard. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest—pounding like crazy. I hadn't felt that kind of adrenaline in ages. Every thump reminded me of how terrifying the last hour had been.

I glanced at the curtains next to me. Silently, I got up and pulled them open, letting the sunlight stream in.

"Sunshine... so good!"

Looking at the sunlight outside and glancing at my monitor in which I had quit the game and stayed on the store interface, I slowly exhaled.

I had to admit one thing – I lost, and I had lost it completely.

Thinking about the game experience I just had, as I leaned back in my chair and stared at the bright sun, I realized my legs were a little weak.

But then, as the fear started to fade. I suddenly thought of something.

I silently grabbed my phone, found my friend's account, and sent a message.

"Old Zhang, I found an interesting game. It's super exciting! You've got to try it too."

"It's the new work Escape by the designer of To the Moon. What type? Sneaking and decryption – I have to say, it's insanely thrilling!"

Everything is sharable in friendship. You don't have to thank me, Brother.

After sending the message, I took a deep breath. Then I gazed at the scenery outside the window. It is beautiful, yet I never realized it. What a Jerk I was!

Thank goodness I played this game during the day! Praise the Sun!

Leaning back in the chair, about half an hour passed. I started browsing Metube for some Escape streams and tutorials. Three hours passed soon... When my phone, lying on the table, buzzed.

Lao Zhang had sent you a message.

A simple sentence and an emoji, punctuated with three exclamation marks perfectly captured his message –

"Fuck you!!!"

cxxx{}:::::::::::::::::::::::::::>

Seeing that, I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

The fear from earlier is completely gone now!

In my head, I could already picture the moment when Zhang must've gotten startled while playing.

After the laughter subsided, I noticed my monitor was still on, and my account was still on the entry interface of Escape.

After a brief moment of silence, I closed the platform quietly. As I pray to my ancestors.

There are a lot of players like me.

Initially, many of us heard about Escape because of To the Moon.

But, more of us were tricked into the game through various gaming communities and forums.

Like me~ a lot of us were skeptical, curious, and unwilling to admit defeat after reading other players' posts.

How scary could a horror game be? Was it all just marketing hype? Has Chen Xu fallen like everyone into marketing gimmicks?

With that in mind, a lot of us decided to play it ourselves, planning to post screenshots of our cleared game to show off in the forums later.

After all, when it comes to bravery, aside from those truly fearless players, plenty of us have an overconfident belief in our own courage.

After all, we all knew every game has a bat or Gun. This was the source of our confidence.

But, after I entered the game, I quickly realized what it was all about.

Not to mention the late-stage content, the initial stages alone were enough to scare away a group of us.

Some of us entered the game feeling smug, only to be persuaded to retreat at the gate of the Mental Hospital or by pressing the Ctrl + Shift and finally ESC.

Others quit when they opened the door and saw Chubby for the first time.

Of course, most of us made it to the basement. But facing that pitch-dark environment, where you can't even see your own fingers, and being chased by a lunatic holding a nail-studded wooden board, many were persuaded to give up at this point.

Still, a few of us gritted our teeth and pushed through.

But after we repaired the generator, got that shot from the priest, and entered the prison stage, we realized that all of that was just the appetizer!

We quit at different stages of the game, but after it was all said and done, we all shared one thing in common.

We immediately posted on the game forum, either recommending or warning other players.

It was like a Matryoshka effect, one after another.

After all, if I was terrified, why not make someone else feel the same way? This Misery should be shared...

After reading all kinds of posts, some players were left completely confused, unable to grasp what the horror game "Escape" was really about.

Some people, in an attempt to be more convincing, deliberately posted screenshots of less terrifying scenes.

But others detailed their experiences, insisting that "Escape" is truly horrifying.

These claims kept drawing in more players, eager to experience the game, each one diving in after hearing the tricky tales of the Pinocchio army.

It was like a relay race: as soon as one player reached the finish line, they passed the baton~ which signifies the tenderness to the next.

The "Escape" player community just kept growing.

As more players joined, the spread of news about the game expanded too.

At first, when related topics emerged, Chen Xu still had to subtly guide them, planting little hints or creating in-game memes for players to latch onto.

But as more and more players were scared out of their wits by The Giant Mental Hospital. Neon Game was no longer needed to guide anything.

One spontaneous discussion was enough to create hot topics. Like sparks, these conversations caught fire, growing and expanding the game's influence even further.

If you are confused about the Chapter name, here is some explanation...

"Matryoshka" refers to a set of traditional Russian nesting dolls. These are wooden dolls that are placed one inside another, with each doll being smaller than the one before it. The outermost doll is usually painted to look like a woman in traditional Russian dress, and when you open it, you find a smaller doll inside, and so on, until you reach the tiniest one.

The term "Matryoshka" is often used metaphorically to describe something layered or nested within itself, like in your text where the spread of posts on the forum is compared to one person after another, like opening the dolls one by one.
