章 49: Rescue and Revelation

The previous explosions and the blackout in the area were caused by him.

Originally, they had secretly planned their escape, planning to break out tonight with Da Costa leading the way.

The other superpowered individuals would then fight back, defeat the Hydra guards, and escape the base.

He waited for a long time and finally launched the attack during their shift change, unleashing explosive waves that killed several Hydra members.

They were filled with hope, thinking they could finally escape tonight.

But no one expected that Hydra would send their most important weapon to suppress this seemingly insignificant "rebellion."

Once that terrifying demon arrived, they had no chance of winning.

Before Batman and Soren arrived, Da Costa had already prepared himself for death.

Death seemed like that, anyway.

He had seen the faces of his unfortunate companions who died in the experiments.

Their expressions were much more peaceful and calm when their bodies were taken away than when they were enduring pain.

Watching them, Da Costa even felt a strange and illogical envy—after all, nothing could be worse than being trapped in this hell and turned into Hydra's asset forever.

Compared to that, death seemed like a release.

But he was saved.

He, along with everyone else, was rescued by that angelic, beautiful being.

At first, he thought it might be a hallucination before his death.

Back when he was at home, he often went to church with his mom on weekends.

The church's stained glass windows featured a majestic and holy angel, looking down compassionately from above.

He remembered his mom holding his hand, and the little boy looking up, not afraid of falling, curiously watching how the golden holy light passed through the church's intricate dome, piercing his eyelids.

In a daze, Da Costa thought he saw the angel from the church window step down from the altar, barefoot, with white feathers gently falling in front of him.

Those strong arms softly lifted him up.

It must be the angel coming to guide him to the holy kingdom of heaven.

He wasn't a bad kid who ran away from home after all.

The Lord had forgiven his sins, and now he was on his way to paradise.

Da Costa felt the heavy weight lift from his body in an instant, making him feel as light as a feather from the angel's wing.

A deep sense of peace, comfort, and ease washed over him, a feeling he hadn't experienced in hundreds of sleepless nights.

For the first time in a long while, he closed his eyes in deep, restful sleep.

When Da Costa woke up again, he realized he wasn't in heaven, but in an unfamiliar, old-fashioned room.

The wallpaper looked aged, yellowed, and a bit moldy.

The wooden furniture had been worn smooth and shiny from years of use.

The cushions on the armchair were deeply sunken from constant sitting, and the carpet looked faded from too many washings.

But the room also felt warm and cozy, decorated with a kind of old-fashioned, elegant charm.

Da Costa scrambled to sit up, his eyes darting around the room, when he suddenly spotted a blue creature sitting by his bed, causing him to scream in fear.

The creature had the body of a human, but its head was like a beast's, with a blue face, sharp fangs, and thick, blue fur covering its entire body.

Strangely enough, it was wearing a pair of comical glasses and holding a book titled <<Discourse on the Origin of Inequality>>.

The blue creature saw Da Costaa's fear and quickly smiled warmly at him, trying to calm him, "Hello, don't be afraid. You're safe now. I'm Hank. Welcome to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters."

Hearing the creature speak startled Da Costa even more, but he soon calmed down, holding his racing heart.

He nervously asked, "Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters? Are you... a mutant?"

Hank nodded his head and pointed at Da Costa, "It seems you know about the X-Men. Yes, I'm a mutant. People outside call me 'Beast.' And now, you're one of us too."

"Me? I'm a mutant too..." Da Costaa muttered to himself, as everything suddenly made sense.

It's no wonder he sometimes lost control of his abilities, no wonder those bad guys captured him for experiments, and no wonder his powers had suddenly grown so strong...

Wait, who saved him?

"How did I get here? Where's the angel who saved me?" Da Costaa asked urgently.

Hank smiled softly, "You mean the one who brought you here? Right now, it seems he's having an important conversation."

...

In the meeting room at Xavier's School, Soren, Batman, and Professor X—who still had his hair—sat at different sides of the table.

Batman was leading the questioning, Professor X was verifying the truth of the answers through his telepathy, and Soren was responding as best as he could.

"What is the name of your planet?" Batman asked.

"Uh... New Earth," Soren replied hesitantly.

Batman looked at Professor X.

Professor Charles Xavier had a kind and intelligent face, with blue eyes that gleamed like two opals.

He placed two fingers on his temple and scanned Soren's mind for a moment, seeing something surprising.

He furrowed his brow slightly, then nodded his head to Batman.

"Where is New Earth? And why did you come to Earth?" Batman pressed.

"New Earth is in the Perseus Arm, in the Kaplus star system," Soren paused before continuing, "As for why I came to Earth... well, I actually came because of %##… &%%#@#…"

Soren decided to tell them everything that had happened to him, both before and after meeting Dr. Manhattan.

But as he spoke, he noticed that Batman and Professor X were looking at him strangely.

"What's wrong?" he asked, confused.

"We couldn't hear anything you just said," Professor X explained, "It was like you were on mute. We could see your mouth moving, but no sound came out."

Soren stared at him, puzzled.

The professor's eyes, deep blue like opals, looked calm, not accusing or confused—just stating a fact.
