I felt Hayden wrap his arms around me, and couldn't help sobbing. “Hayden… It hurts…”

“It will pass soon, Lottie… It will pass soon…” he comforted me.

How could it pass soon? The needles were piercing deep into my wrist, it was better if I cut off my hand.

“Hayden… Please chop my hand off,” I begged him. “I don't want to die yet.”

I didn't know why Aleksander rolled into the fire. Was his pride so important to him that he’d rather die in a gruesome way? Did he really want me to die with him? Did Hayden succeed in pulling him away from the fire?

I didn't know what was happening with Aleksander as Hayden buried my face in his chest and Aleksander didn't make any noise.

“You won't die, Lottie,” Hayden said in a trembling voice. “I promise you you won't die.”

I wanted to ask him why he was so sure of it, but suddenly I felt the agonizing pain of my heart being torn in half.
