章 44: Chapter 43 : John Wick's Revenge

[Produced by Galaxy Pictures]

[Co-produced by Columbia Pictures/Sony Entertainment]

"Good morning, New Yorkers. The snowstorm is over…"

"Up to 7 inches of snow fell last night, and strong winds hit some areas, trapping several people…"

[Directed by David Leitch/Xu Can]

"City crews are working to clear the snow and restore power…"

"The good news is that today is a sunny day…"

[Screenplay by Xu Can]

[Starring: Xu Can]

The scene opens with a simple, calm black screen, accompanied by a voice-over, and subtitles appearing one after another.

The image then shifts to a night view of New York City along the Hudson River. A damaged Cadillac SUV crashes into the steps of a warehouse.

"Come on out, enjoy the sunshine, walk your dog in the park, go outside…"

The radio continues to play as the car door opens, and Xu Can tumbles out, clutching his abdomen in pain, struggling to stand.

At first, the audience doesn't recognize the person. They assume he's just another actor.

"Why does he look familiar?"

"Wait… is that Xu Can?"

Leonard, seated in the audience, whispers in surprise.

"What?"

Those nearby take a closer look and finally recognize Xu Can's unshaven face.

"It really is him!"

The transformation in his appearance and demeanor is startling—he's almost unrecognizable, looking seriously injured and near death.

Could this be the end for the protagonist? Or is this the final scene, with the entire movie being a flashback?

The audience, filled with questions, continues to watch. The chilling, slightly melancholic tone at the beginning quietly settles into their hearts.

Xu Can's bloodied hands struggle to climb the steps. He leans against the wall with all his strength and pulls a phone from his suit pocket. His bloody fingers leave a print on the screen as he taps a video.

"What are you doing, John?"

A delicate, black-haired woman appears on the small screen.

As Xu Can watches, the fierceness in his eyes gradually softens into tenderness.

"I just want to see you," his voice echoes from the video.

"Come here."

In the video, the woman embraces him warmly. But outside the video, in the cold New York night, Xu Can lies alone beside the warehouse, a deep sadness settling over him.

The video shows the two sharing an intimate kiss, but Xu Can, unable to bear it any longer, closes his eyes in pain.

"Are you still recording…?"

His hand slips, and the phone falls from his grasp as he collapses, unconscious.

The camera pulls back, leaving the lone protagonist to fade into the night.

The unsettling background music intensifies, amplifying the tension among the audience.

The screen fades to black, and a name slowly appears on the right side:

[John Wick]

The title, "John Wick", appears.

In just a few simple shots, the film captures the desolation of a hero in his twilight years. Xu Can's weathered appearance and rich acting skills immediately capture the audience's attention.

The media and critics had initially planned to critique Xu Can's performance. If he could handle Spider-Man, could he manage other roles as well? But now, it seems their drafts can be tossed aside—Xu Can's performance needs no critique.

If they must find faults, they'll have to look at the story's direction for any logical flaws, clichés, or poorly executed action scenes. After all, what impressive action can be filmed with just $16 million?

As critics scribble down notes, Xu Can suddenly feels an itch at his waist.

Emma Stone's hand sneaks playfully across his side.

"Huh?"

"Are you flirting with someone else again? Not even sparing the assistant?" Emma's eyes narrow playfully.

She's well aware of Xu Can's charm, especially as the most handsome Spider-Man.

But Vanessa, his assistant?

Indeed, the actress playing John Wick's wife in the video is none other than Xu Can's personal assistant, Vanessa. Initially helping with tasks on set, she was pulled in for a quick role, even sharing a real on-screen kiss with Xu Can.

"It's necessary for the scene… nothing's going on," Xu Can explains sincerely.

Nothing… for now, he adds mentally.

"Mmm…" Emma pouts, but her hand remains intertwined with Xu Can's as they continue to watch the movie.

The piercing beep of an alarm clock jolts John Wick awake. Outside his massive floor-to-ceiling window, the dark blue sky of New York looms.

Inside the expansive mansion, John Wick is alone once again.

Another dull day with an empty heart.

As he waits for his coffee, memories of his late wife flash in his mind. Anyone who's lost a loved one knows how memories can be uncontrollable, along with the accompanying pain.

Quick cuts interspersed with flashbacks reveal their once warm daily life and the backstory of his wife's illness.

The clean, efficient editing earns nods of approval from the professional critics.

"David Leitch and Xu Can are both new directors…"

"Is he truly a genius?"

"Fun fact: Xu Can directed some scenes in Spider-Man as well…"

The video continues.

After attending his wife's funeral, John Wick returns to his empty home, his eyes vacant.

A courier arrives, delivering a dog crate and a letter.

"John, I'm sorry I can't spend the rest of my life with you."

"But you can't live without love… so start with her."

"I love you, John."

"I've found eternal peace, and now it's time for you to find yours."

The beagle puppy in the crate stares at her new owner with wide eyes, not understanding human tears or grief.

Xu Can's portrayal of heartbreak is so moving that many women in the audience begin to weep, including Emma Stone.

"Boohoo…"

Xu Can glances at the tearful Emma next to him, almost startled. Why is she crying?

Sharp-eyed critics notice that before the puppy appears, the room and scene are bathed in cold tones. When the puppy arrives, the lighting shifts to warmer colors, symbolizing the puppy's importance in John's heart.

Could the entire film be about the puppy's redemption? An inspirational tale of the protagonist finding his way back to life?

But what about the killing scenes in the trailer?

With more questions than answers, the audience remains engrossed in the plot.

After a period of peaceful life, John Wick's expression noticeably softens. The puppy wakes him up joyfully each day, and life begins to look hopeful again.

One day, John Wick drives his beloved sports car to refuel, encountering a few gangsters speaking Russian at the gas station. They're amazed by his 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429—a real classic.

The gang leader wants to buy it, but John refuses.

The thug gets angry, cursing in Russian: "You can buy anything with money, bitch."

To his surprise, John Wick responds fluently in Russian: "Except this car, idiot."

Not interested in a fight, John drives off.

Later that night, John is startled awake by a noise. The puppy, Daisy, rushes downstairs.

John follows, only to be struck on the head with a baseball bat at the top of the stairs.

A group of masked men invade his home, beating him as he lies dazed, then stealing his car keys.

When he comes to, the puppy, Daisy, lies lifeless beside him—the last gift from his deceased wife, taken from him before it could even bring him comfort.

The heart-wrenching scene leaves the audience stunned. The puppy dies just like that? How could they do this?

However, as the audience grieves, the protagonist John Wick shows no sign of pain or vulnerability. He calmly buries the puppy, wipes the blood off the floor, and stares blankly into space.

Memories of his wife flood back.

Then, John Wick slowly looks up at the camera.

All traces of humanity in his eyes are gone, lost with his wife and puppy.

Now, his gaze is filled with cold, steely determination.

Chilling.

The massive IMAX screen zooms in on Xu Can's close-up.

The audience feels a shiver down their spines, their hair standing on end.

This is the look of a man possessed.

The real story begins here, with a single theme: Revenge.
