Prologue: The Golden Apple

Phanessa Vashti Tauriel was only fifteen when her world began to change in ways she couldn't yet comprehend. As the daughter of two renowned wildlife biologists, she had spent most of her young life trailing through dense jungles, dusty research labs, and the vibrant streets of far-off cities. Her parents, Philippe and Vanessa Tauriel, were always on the hunt for the rarest plants and most elusive creatures. They had an insatiable curiosity for the natural world, a trait they had passed down to their daughter. Phanessa felt most content when surrounded by nature, finding solace in the wild beauty others often overlooked.

This time, their expedition brought them to Manaus, a bustling city deep within the Amazon rainforest. The town, a vibrant mosaic of cultures and colors, lay at the very heart of the jungle, acting as a gateway to the mysteries of the rainforest. A famous medical company had hired her parents to explore the depths of the Amazon, searching for plants with untapped medicinal properties. While they ventured daily into the thick green maze, Phanessa was left in the care of her aunt Eleni, a spirited woman who embraced the city's chaotic charm.

Phanessa adored the freedom these days granted her, spending her time wandering through the colorful markets that seemed to pulse with life. She mingled with locals, their languages a melodic mix of Portuguese, indigenous dialects, and the occasional word of English. The scents of the market were intoxicating—a heady blend of spices, ripe fruits, and grilled meats that filled the air with warmth and vibrancy. She indulged in the sweet treats sold by street vendors, her favorite being a warm, sticky honey bread she would savor as she explored. Her aunt preferred the stalls that sold strong, smelly alcohol, often sharing a mischievous grin with Phanessa as she sampled different brews.

As Phanessa and her aunt made their usual rounds to buy groceries, the market was alive with its usual afternoon energy on this particular day. The familiar scents swirled around her as they walked, her aunt's hand gently holding hers. The crowds bustled with activity, their voices a lively hum that echoed off the colorful stalls. Her aunt stopped at a small shop that sold candles and incense, turning to Phanessa with a reassuring smile. "Stay here while I head inside to purchase some of your mom's favorite scents, okay? I'll be right back."

Phanessa nodded, watching as her aunt disappeared into the store. She looked around, taking in the sights and sounds of the market. Nearby, a woman was arguing with a vegetable vendor, her hands waving animatedly as she clutched a bruised tomato. The scene was familiar, comforting in its ordinariness. But then, something caught her eye.

Across from where she stood, an elderly lady walked into one of the narrow alleyways that snaked through the city like hidden veins. Phanessa found it strange—she had walked these streets with her aunt countless times and was sure she knew every nook and cranny. But this alleyway and the small, run-down shop at its end seemed entirely new. The building looked ancient, its paint peeling and windows clouded with dust, yet there was an odd pull in her chest, a compulsion she couldn't ignore.

As the older woman disappeared into the shop, she turned slowly, her gaze locking with Phanessa's. The woman smiled, a slow, knowing smile that sent a shiver down Phanessa's spine. Then, she was gone, leaving Phanessa standing there, her heart pounding with curiosity and a touch of fear.

Hesitating momentarily, she glanced back at the candle shop where her aunt was still browsing. Her aunt always took her time shopping, so Phanessa reasoned she could sneak a quick look. She had always been drawn to the new and unexplored, and this mysterious shop was calling to her with an almost magnetic force.

She tucked her hands into her pockets and stepped into the alley, her heart fluttering with a mix of excitement and unease. The noise of the market faded behind her as she approached the shop. The door creaked loudly as she pushed it open, echoing in the dimly lit interior. A musty smell filled the air, like old books and forgotten places, enveloping her as she stepped inside.

As her eyes adjusted to the gloom, she saw the strange trinkets and oddities lining the shelves. They looked like they belonged in a museum or a wizard's lair rather than a back alley shop in Manaus. Ancient-looking tomes, jars filled with unidentifiable substances, and peculiar artifacts cluttered every surface. The atmosphere was thick with the sense of forgotten secrets and hidden knowledge.

"Hello?" Phanessa called out, her voice small in the eerie silence. A shuffling sound came from the back of the store, and then the older woman appeared. Her face was a map of wrinkles, her eyes sharp despite her years, and she moved with a grace that belied her age.

"What brings you here, child?" the woman asked, her voice husky but not unkind.

"I'm just looking," Phanessa replied quickly, though she wasn't sure what she was looking for. A part of her wanted to flee, to return to the market's safety, but something rooted her in place, an inexplicable urge to stay.

The woman nodded as if she understood, gesturing for Phanessa to look around. As she did, her gaze was drawn to a glass case near the back of the store. Unlike the rest of the dusty, cluttered shop, this case was pristine, its glass polished to a shine. A shiny, golden apple was inside, resting on a velvet pillow.

Phanessa moved closer, mesmerized by the fruit. It gleamed in the dim light, more beautiful than anything she had ever seen. It didn't look real, more like something from a fairy tale than an actual apple. She felt an inexplicable yearning to touch it, to hold it, even though a part of her knew she shouldn't.

"Ah, I see that one of the seven Fruits of Verity has peaked your curiosity," the elderly woman said from behind her, startling Phanessa. The woman's eyes were fixed on the apple, and she smiled knowingly. "It's not something for just anyone. "

Phanessa tore her gaze away from the apple and looked at the woman. "What makes it so special?"

The woman didn't answer immediately. Instead, she stepped closer, her hands clasped in front of her. "It is said that whoever eats that apple will be forever changed, their destiny rewritten."

The words sent a shiver down Phanessa's spine, but she couldn't shake the feeling that the apple was meant for her. She didn't know why or how, but it called to her a silent promise of something more, something extraordinary.

"Can I—" Phanessa began, but the woman interrupted her.

"It is not a gift to be taken lightly," the woman warned, her voice soft but firm. "It comes with great power but also great consequences. Are you sure you are ready for such a thing?"

Phanessa hesitated. She was only fifteen, after all. But something deep inside her—some instinct she couldn't name—urged her to accept. She nodded, her decision made in the quiet certainty of a child who had never been afraid of the unknown.

The older woman studied her for a long moment, then slowly opened the glass case. She lifted the apple with a careful reverence and handed it to Phanessa. The fruit was surprisingly warm in her hands, almost as if it were alive.

"Take it, I can see it in your eyes that the Fruit of Verity has chosen you," the woman said. "But know that once you eat it, there is no going back."

Phanessa's heart pounded as she looked down at the golden apple. Without another word, she brought it to her lips and took a bite.

The world around her shifted and blurred as the sweet, otherworldly taste filled her mouth. She barely noticed as the shop faded away, replaced by a sense of weightlessness, a feeling of something ancient and powerful awakening within her.

At that moment, Phanessa's life was irrevocably changed.

Almost ten years later, Phanessa Tauriel, now known as Phay, sighed as she wiped down the bar counter for the twentieth time that day. She couldn't help but reflect on the strange twist of fate that had led her from a curious teenager in the streets of Manaus to the owner of a thriving sports bar and tattoo shop.

"Sigh. To think my childish curiosity would lead me to a life of constantly wiping down tables and permanently marking people's skin with ink," she mumbled under her breath.

Phay glanced up, watching her bartender and one of her best friends, Visha, skillfully mixing a gin and tonic for a customer who had had one too many. Visha was the epitome of edgy cool, with her platinum blonde pixie cut, one side shaved to reveal a trail of silver piercings. Her black eyeliner was sharp enough to cut, and her dark lipstick completed the badass vibe she effortlessly exuded.

Catching Phay staring, Visha rolled her pale green eyes and blew a bubble with her gum, popping it with a sharp snap before smirking at her boss. Phay chuckled, appreciating her friend's unbothered attitude. Despite Visha's tough exterior, she was fiercely loyal, and Phay loved her for it.

As Phay continued her work, her thoughts drifted back to the past. She absently touched the tips of her ears, which had elongated and grown pointed after that fateful day in the old shop. Her once brown eyes had transformed into a striking liquid gold, another reminder of the change she had undergone. Luckily, the older woman gave her an antique necklace, its emerald pendant glowing softly against the rusty gold chain wrapped around her neck. This necklace could conceal her transformations, allowing her to live a somewhat everyday life.

Phay twirled the necklace between her fingers, the dark green of the emerald matching her long, wavy, blackish-green hair—yet another change from eating that golden apple. She remembered the day she had returned to her aunt wearing the necklace. Her aunt Eleni had asked where it came from, and Phay had simply shrugged, saying, "An elderly lady gave it to me, saying it was good luck."

Her aunt had given her a strange look but hadn't pressed further. Phanessa chuckled at the memory. 'Aunt Eleni had always been laid back, even with children.' She had accepted Phay's odd explanation without question, much like she had accepted the strangeness of Manaus.

Shaking her head to clear the memories, Phay focused on the present. She had a client coming in ten minutes to get work done on an old tattoo, and she preferred to have everything set up before they arrived.

"I suppose I can't complain," she mused to herself as she set out the tools of her trade. "Because of that old woman's help, I own a booming sports bar and tattoo shop with my best friends. Life could be worse."

But even as she smiled at the thought, a small part of her still wondered about her chosen path and the one she had left behind. "She said there were six other fruits around the world, huh? So that meant six other people like me."
