"Your Majesty," Eirik had said, quickly rising to his feet as he recognized Queen Elena. He was about to bow, but she waved him off, a gentle smile on her lips.

"No need for formalities, Eirik," she said, her voice soft and soothing, almost maternal. "I hope I'm not disturbing your sleep."

Not at all, Your Majesty," Eirik replied, though his heart was still pounding in his chest. He couldn't help but wonder what had brought the queen to his chambers at such a late hour.

Before he could offer her a proper greeting, Queen Elena had already moved closer, sitting on the edge of his bed, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. She reached out and took his hand in hers, the warmth of her touch both comforting and unsettling.
