The sun peeked through the curtains of Marcus's apartment, casting a soft glow over the room. He stirred, rubbing the sleep from his eyes as his phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was an unfamiliar number. Curious, he answered it.
"Hello, Marcus Thompson speaking."
"Good morning, Marcus. This is James Hart, your new agent. Your father and Mr. Roberts introduced us a while back, remember?"
Marcus sat up, fully awake now. "Of course, Mr. Hart. Good morning. What can I do for you?"
"I've got some news. The Fulham officials have contacted me regarding a contract negotiation for you. They're keen to discuss your future with the club. I think it's a good opportunity for us to meet and go over the details. How about we meet at the Kensington Cafe at ten?"
"Sounds good. I'll see you there," Marcus replied, excitement bubbling within him.
An hour later, Marcus found himself at the bustling Kensington Cafe. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as he scanned the room for his agent. He spotted James Hart, a well-dressed man in his late forties, seated at a corner table, a folder open before him.
"Marcus, good to see you," James greeted warmly, shaking his hand firmly.
"Good to see you too, Mr. Hart," Marcus replied, taking a seat.
"Let's get straight to business," James said, sliding the folder across the table. "Fulham wants to secure your future with them. They're offering a contract that reflects your potential and recent performances. However, there's something important we need to discuss."
Marcus listened intently as James outlined the terms of the contract, including the salary, bonuses, and performance incentives. Everything seemed promising, but James's expression turned serious as he continued.
"The salary, bonuses, and incentives details can be fine-tuned during the negotiations but I believe the relegation release clause should be a must in the contract". James said
"Given Fulham's current position in the Premier League, there's a risk of relegation. It's crucial to protect your interests. I strongly advise including a relegation release clause in your contract."
"A relegation release clause?" Marcus asked with his curiosity piqued.
"Yes. It's a clause that allows you to leave the club if they get relegated. We can set it at £20 million. This ensures that if the worst happens, you're not stuck in the Championship. Clubs interested in you would have a clear figure to meet for your transfer."
Marcus considered the suggestion. He knew Fulham was struggling in the Premier League, and while he believed in his ability and the team's potential, he also understood the unpredictability of football.
"Do you think it's necessary?" Marcus asked.
James nodded firmly. "Absolutely. It's a safeguard for your career. Fulham might survive, but if they don't, you need options. A £20 million clause is reasonable and ensures you won't be undervalued."
Marcus took a deep breath, weighing the decision. He trusted James's expertise and knew his agent had his best interests at heart.
"Fine, let's include the clause," Marcus agreed.
"Good choice," James said, a satisfied smile on his face. "I'll handle the negotiations with Fulham's officials. The negotiations start in a week. They'll understand it's a standard precaution."
They spent the next hour going over the finer details of the contract, ensuring everything was in order. James reassured Marcus that he would handle the discussions with the club, emphasizing the importance of securing his future.
As they wrapped up the meeting, James leaned back in his chair. "You've got a bright future ahead, Marcus. This is just the beginning. Keep performing like you have been, and the opportunities will keep coming."
"Thanks, Mr. Hart. I appreciate all your help," Marcus said sincerely.
"Anytime. Now, go out there and show them what you're made of," James encouraged.
