The steward was startled by the ferocity of the crowd; he only had ten guns, and should the rioters surge forward, the manor's guards would stand no chance of resisting.

He hid his trembling hands behind his back and said with fierce bravado:

"You dare to threaten a noble, that's a serious crime!"
