The day of the wedding arrived, and everything was much more private than Haldor had initially imagined.
Only a few people with simple attire and eye markings on their clothing were present, and everyone remained silent.
Haldor was dressed in a ceremonial military uniform; after all, this marriage was founded on a future war, and unfortunately, neither of them could escape their path.
What better way to face it than this?
"It's time to begin..."
'I wonder if I will really be happy...' Rhaenyra thought as she entered the scene in a white dress.
She was about to get married. Haldor had told her that he needed a loyal wife who would be by his side at all times; in return, he offered to be her executioner and protector, someone who would fight her battles and watch over her. He understood that she didn't have romantic feelings, and he probably didn't feel anything either.
If they both understood that their relationship would require work, they thought it would be easier to move forward.
Days passed, and now that the lords of the major houses had gathered, it was time for Haldor to start thinking more about war than anything else.
'There are more than fifteen people, far more than I expected,' Rhaenyra thought as she stood in front of Haldor and took his hands.
This place was atop a mountain where the weather was warm and humid, and anyone could feel the vibrations of nature.
Everyone present was an ancient witness of the House of the Dragon; others were people of the highest esteem, serving as witnesses to this marriage.
Anyone present here knew Haldor and the princess; both were the salvation from what could be the greatest war in the world.
"Before the heavens, we are gathered here today to celebrate a unique and special moment: the sacred union between a couple and their beloved. In the presence of life and magic, we invite you to listen to the vows that will be exchanged," said a dark-skinned man as he handed Haldor a knife.
"Your blood will be united from now on; both of you will bear children who will be your greatest pride."
Haldor stared intently at Rhaenyra, took both her hands, and said, "Rhaenyra, I promise to always be by your side, listening to your words with attention and affection. In moments of silence, I will be here to accompany you with my presence and my receptiveness."
When Rhaenyra heard these words, she felt something move in her heart. Her indifferent gaze changed just a little, and after a few seconds, she said, "Haldor, I promise to be your faithful companion, sharing with you every sound of the world and every melody of the heart. In joy and in sorrow, in health and in sickness, I will be here to listen to you and support you."
Haldor smiled; he was not excited about getting married, especially not in times of war when his soldiers were being led to certain death. However, to avoid more wars, they had to put an end to this once and for all.
The officiant extended his hands and said, "Let these vows be witnesses to the eternal commitment you have made to each other. May life and magic guide and protect you on your journey together. Long live the union of the princess and her consort!"
Haldor simply kissed Rhaenyra's lips; there was nothing more than a feeling of attraction in his movements, but for now, this was enough.
"My sword and magic will protect you from now on, as you are my wife," Haldor murmured softly.
Rhaenyra said nothing; she simply remained silent, reflecting on what had just transpired.
