Chapter 89: Fierce Attack (III)
The Pegasus knights charged down with loud battle cries, their holy light illuminating the night sky. The first to notice the disturbance were the small demons patrolling the skies. As the knights descended from above, the demons shrieked, raising their spears to meet the incoming assault. The two sides clashed fiercely, with the knights' swords piercing through the demons' bodies, while the fireballs spewed from the demons' mouths exploded in the night sky. In an instant, the once-dark sky turned into a spectacle of fireworks, filled with brilliant flashes of orange and pure white light.
"Initiate the ritual immediately!"
"In your dreams!"
Before the words of the Destruction Mage even finished, his vision blurred, and the next moment, Alex appeared in front of him. The sword in Alex's hand gleamed with holy light as he swiftly slashed at the cultists before him. A series of explosions followed, and before the cultists could even offer their lives for their faith, they were sent flying. Alex then pulled back his sword and swung it toward the broken statue ahead. A burst of sword energy, transformed from the radiant holy light, shot forth from the sharp blade, heading straight for the target.
However, just as the sword energy was about to reach the statue, which seemed fragile and dilapidated, the green light on the statue's surface suddenly flared up. The sword energy Alex had unleashed vanished into thin air, like a droplet of water falling into a pond. Even so, the green light on the statue dimmed considerably, as though it had expended a great deal of power.
Alex wouldn't let such an opportunity slip by. The holy light on his sword began to shine again, ready to strike once more.
"Get lost!"
With a furious shout, the Destruction Mage finally made his move. Without any visible action on his part, a deep red flame surged toward Alex like a wave. Faced with the strange fire, Alex had no choice but to roll backward and evade it.
At the same time, the cultists around the altar seemed to snap out of their daze. They began shouting curses and summoning demons from the depths of hell to attack. But at that moment, arrows and spells flew from the darkness, striking their targets with deadly precision. The valiant sword-and-shield warrior led his comrades out of the shadows, forming a solid barrier to block the cultists' advance.
The battle had now truly begun.
In the sky above, the Pegasus knights and the small demons clashed violently. Although the knights were far superior in strength, numbers often compensate for a lack of quality. Faced with the overwhelming assault of hundreds of small demons, the mere twenty-something Pegasus knights found it difficult to break through their defense.
The mercenaries temporarily halted the cultists' advance, and the Pegasus knights above were held back by the swarm of demons. For a brief moment, the altar where Alex stood became an eerie calm, like the eye of a storm. Only he and the Destruction Mage remained in the area—no one else was present.
"Die, lapdog of order!"
"You should be the one to die, you flaming corpse."
At this point, neither side cared to ask the other what they were planning. Both knew one thing: the other was the enemy, and enemies were meant to be fought, defeated, and killed. As for what these people were doing here—who cares? Once they became corpses, they would have plenty of time to figure it out!
For now, the only thing that mattered was the battle.
Holy Storm!
Dozens of radiant swords materialized before Alex, and with a swift movement, he sent them flying toward the Destruction Mage. The Destruction Mage let out a furious roar as crimson flames erupted from his robes, forming into a giant humanoid figure that stood in front of Alex. The flaming giant extended its arms to block the incoming storm of swords. Radiant blades clashed with the hellfire, causing explosions and flashes of light as holy energy collided with infernal flames. The scorching heat expanded and burst in the air, and amidst the chaos, Alex rolled forward, charging through the remnants of the hellfire, his sword poised to strike his enemy.
He chose not to use his time-manipulating abilities this time. After being thwarted twice by the bald mage and Stone, Alex had learned never to rely on time powers against opponents who seemed as strong or stronger than himself.
But that didn't mean he had no other ways to deal with this fiery man!
"Foolish move!"
Seeing Alex rushing toward him, the Destruction Mage sneered and raised his right hand. With a flick of his wrist, dozens of fireballs appeared out of thin air behind him and shot toward Alex. In response to the incoming barrage, Alex gripped his sword tightly. In the next moment, dazzling holy light transformed into shields that appeared before him.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
One by one, the fireballs relentlessly slammed into the Holy Light Barrier, exploding on impact. After withstanding several seconds of continuous assault, the barrier began to flicker, as if it were a balloon about to burst. Just as the Destruction Mage prepared to strike again, he suddenly noticed a blinding light emerging from the seemingly fragile Holy Light Barrier!
Boom!!
The Holy Light Barrier finally shattered under the onslaught of hellfire, but at the same moment, the sacred power hidden within erupted, spreading out in all directions. As the divine aura swept towards him, the Destruction Mage screamed and retreated. To ordinary people, it might have felt like a gentle breeze, but to the Destruction Mage, it was like being doused in acid!
The holy light searing through the air caused unbearable pain for the Destruction Mage. He staggered backward, screaming in agony, while Alex seized the opportunity to charge forward. His sword, the Void Cutter, slashed down toward the Destruction Mage's body. Alex was confident that this strike would cleave from the shoulder all the way to the Destruction Mage's heart, ending this wretched creature once and for all!
But as it turns out, mages are mages for a reason.
Boom!!
Just as Alex's sword swung down, a surge of hellfire erupted between him and his target, forming a blazing barrier that blocked his view. His sword was deflected as it clashed with the surging flames, and Alex was forced to step back several paces, barely managing to resist the shockwave from the hellfire.
"You'll never defeat a mage."
As the flames dissipated, the Destruction Mage sneered coldly at Alex, a smug smile forming on his lips. In this world, spellcasters often harbored a sense of superiority over other professions, and even though he had "transitioned" into a Destruction Mage, he still felt the same. Paladins were indeed troublesome, but to defeat a mage? This young man was far from capable.
I don't believe it!
Alex's expression darkened as he glared at the Destruction Mage before him. His biggest weakness was his lack of diverse ranged attacks, making it easy for the enemy to counter him. In contrast, the Destruction Mage had a myriad of techniques, making it difficult for Alex to even get close. A mere Destruction Mage, not even a lich, and yet he was giving him this much trouble?
If that's the case… it's time to change tactics.
"Hmm?"
The Destruction Mage's eyes widened in surprise as he saw Alex lower his sword. Alex coldly stared at him, and the radiant holy light that had been shining on his body slowly faded. At the same time, an eerie aura began to rise from Alex, spreading from his body like a dark mist.
What is this…?
Sensing the change, the Destruction Mage furrowed his brow. If the young man had previously radiated the repulsive divine aura of an order guardian, then now he exuded something entirely different—like a ferocious beast from the depths of the abyss.
No, not a single beast! It felt like countless bloodthirsty, savage creatures were glaring at him with cold, murderous intent, ready to tear him apart at any moment!
Alex slowly raised his head, and it was only then that the Destruction Mage noticed with shock that his opponent's eyes had transformed into a pair of eerie, golden pupils.
Could this be…?
Before the Destruction Mage could fully grasp the situation, Alex's figure vanished in a flash. In the blink of an eye, he leapt into the air, sword in hand, and brought it crashing down toward the Destruction Mage!
