Meditating for the Undead and Summoning Element was more than just a means of increasing Magic energy—it was a form of feeding. This special type of meditation turned the Summoning Stardust's Magic energy into sustenance for the Summoned beast or Undead, strengthening them over time. In the past six years, Light had devoted all his magic energy to nurturing his Undead every single day.
The Undead and Summoning Elements were quite similar, though the Undead Element held a slight edge. Both Elements granted a Mage the ability to form contracts with one creature per stage: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Super, and Forbidden Curse. The key difference was that all Undead contracts were permanent, while in the Summoning Element, only contracts from Intermediate onwards were permanent, with the Basic Stage contract being temporary.
Light's Basic Stage Undead was a Skeleton, a Standard Commander-class creature. His Intermediate Stage Undead was a Phantom, an Advancing Warrior-class creature. At the Advanced Stage, he commanded a Zombie, a Lesser Warrior-class creature.
As for his Summoned Beasts, Light's arsenal included three formidable Dreadful Hell Hounds. These creatures, hailing from the Summoned Beast Plane, were notorious for their brutal combat prowess. There was a special group of Mages who had Awakened the Summoning, Curse, and Undead Elements, and they could combine these powers to Summon creatures like the Dreadful Curse Hell Hounds—beasts who acted as both predators and order upholders in their realm.
Despite his formidable creatures, Light kept his true strength hidden, even from those closest to him. None of his classmates or peers, and not even his family, were aware of the full extent of his abilities.
The day of the Welcoming Meet was finally here. It was the most anticipated and majestic event on the Azure Campus, where older students, eager to witness the humiliation of the new arrivals, gathered in droves. The Pearl Institute was home to the best of the best, and while these new students might have been outstanding where they came from, here, they were but a small part of a sea of magic geniuses.
In a corner of the cafeteria, a group of students huddled together, exchanging secretive whispers. "Did you ask around about the Summoned beasts of the six Summoners and one Necromancer?" one of the boys asked, his voice low but excited.
"I did," another replied eagerly. "Hai Dafu has a White Armor Battle Cocoon, and its combat prowess is nearly equal to an adult Magical Beast. Zheng Bingxiao commands a Rock Demon Soldier, which is known for its formidable defense and power. Wang Liting has a Bone Corpse Demon, and someone else has a Spirit Wolf."
"What about the Necromancer?" someone else chimed in. "That guy called Light?"
"I haven't heard much about what kind of Undead he has," the boy admitted. "It's odd that he's not in the same room as the other six."
As the day progressed, the excitement on campus reached fever pitch. The most heated topic was, of course, the Beast Combat Competition set for the afternoon—a highly anticipated event that had become the highlight of the Azure Campus at Pearl Institute for years.
Light spent the morning preparing for the event, meticulously adjusting his appearance and ensuring his battle armor clothes were perfect. Upon arriving at the Azure Battlegrounds, he parted ways with his dormmates and made his way to the back of the stage, where the Summoners were preparing for their matches.
The arena had been transformed into the colossal "Beast Battle Cage," a massive structure designed to contain the ferocious beasts that would be summoned during the competition. Students poured into the building after lunch, creating a tide of energy and excitement that rippled through the arena.
By three o'clock, the entire building was packed to capacity. The grand atmosphere, full of youthful energy, only heightened the anticipation for the battles to come.
Hai Dafu, one of the Summoners, could hardly contain his excitement. "My White Armor Scorpion will show them the meaning of complete annihilation!" he boasted loudly.
Zheng Bingxiao stood nearby, calm as ever, while the other competitors waited in silence. For them, this competition was more than just a battle—it was their chance to prove themselves as the best among the elite Magicians chosen from across the nation.
The ceremony began with a speech from none other than Dean Xiao. Standing before tens of thousands of students, he began, "Before I make my speech, there's one thing I need to clarify for all of you."
"If you aspire to be Magicians who wish to be revered by society, to earn high salaries, and to live luxurious lives, then I must tell you—you've come to the wrong place."
Dean Xiao's words caused a ripple of surprise through the crowd.
"The Magicians who graduate from Pearl Institute are not trained to seek wealth or fame. They are the ones with the strength to change the world. They are the heroes who protect humanity. What we lack are not resources or fame, but Magicians with an eternal heart that pursues Supreme Magic!"
Light watched the crowd carefully, noticing the flicker in their eyes as they absorbed the Dean's powerful words. In the pursuit of Supreme Magic, all other desires—fame, profit—became as insignificant as clouds drifting by.
Dean Xiao continued, "Today, we are here to witness the abilities of seven new Summoners and one Necromancer! These students are the main focus of today's event, but don't worry—if you defeat them, you'll take their place as the true stars of the show!"
On the other side of the arena, in the Lightning section, a young man with spiky hair stood rigid. His wide-open eyes were fixed on the stage, where the seven main competitors stood. His gaze, however, was locked onto the figure in the middle of the group.
"Xu Zhaoting, what's wrong?" a girl next to him asked, her brow furrowed in concern.
Xu Zhaoting didn't respond immediately, still staring at Light. After a few moments, he shook his head, as though trying to shake off the shock.
"Xu Zhaoting?" The girl pushed his arm, trying to get his attention.
Finally, he replied, his voice slow and measured. "I just saw an old classmate of mine."
"An old classmate? Are you saying one of the seven students on stage is your old classmate?" The girl's eyes widened in surprise. "If that's the case, why do you look like you've seen a ghost?"
Xu Zhaoting shook his head again, still struggling to process what he had just realized. "When I knew him… he didn't have the Undead Element."
The girl blinked in confusion. "He didn't have the Undead Element back then? Does that mean he's an Intermediate Magician now?"
Xu Zhaoting nodded slowly. "Yes. And judging by the look of things, he's mastered it."
The girl's mouth dropped open in astonishment. "Then… what Element did he have before? I heard that Intermediate Magic requires a very complex array of Stars in the Nebula. Even if someone has reached the Intermediate level, it doesn't mean they can actually use the Intermediate spells!"
Xu Zhaoting didn't answer. His gaze was once again fixed on Light, standing tall in the center of the stage.
Dean Xiao, meanwhile, had finished his speech and turned his attention to the competitors. "Who would like to go first?" he asked, his tone inviting but firm.
"I'll go!" Hai Dafu declared, stepping forward with confidence.
Dean Xiao smiled. "Then let's begin."
Hai Dafu closed his eyes, and the Stars of his Summoning Element began to align. Under his control, they quickly formed a Dimensional Star Path. The space around him rippled as the Star Path split open, revealing a dark, chaotic, and cold aura flowing from the tunnel to another world.
The audience held their breath as the dust began to settle, revealing the creature Hai Dafu had summoned. Its triangular head was covered in sharp spikes, and its massive forelimbs, resembling battleaxes, were encased in solid keratin armor. Its long, visible spikes and bone scythe hind legs made it a terrifying sight.
"The White Armored Battle Scorpion!" someone in the audience shouted.
The students of Pearl Institute, renowned for their knowledge, instantly recognized the creature.
The scorpion wasted no time. It focused on the four challengers before it, and with a screech, it launched its attack!
